Title: Surveys

My boss has asked everyone to come up with ideas to increase the number of survey cards we get back from the customers to share during tomorrow's staff meeting.

I've been racking my brain and can't come up with any that don't cost money. And we can't afford to spend any money.

I have resorted to writing down anything at this point and here is what I came up with:

"Complete one survey get another one FREE."

Ahem, they're all free.  But the point is that I said the word FREE and that will make them come running.

Seriously I can't think of one thing, especially since I consider surveys a waste of paper and killing many trees.  We have not received any helpful feedback from these surveys so far.

How about a draw for a prize? It could be some corporate merchandise. Or plug the "help us to help you" angle.

Make the survey as easy as possible. Do you have one on your website? Can you send it by email? Have you tried calling them to ask 2-3 questions after each order?  Look at alternative methods of getting the information from your customers.

Are you including postage? postage-paid envelopes if needed? Making the survey a nice bright color that stands out in a pile of white junk mail?

I definitely agree with a drawing. It could be that you are entered into a quarterly drawing for a $10 gift certificate for example.  Depending on what your company does, you could offer a discount on services of 5% in a drawing.

Sorry, like I said we can't afford to give merchandise or gift certificates.  It's just not in the budget this year.  We've had to lay people off because of the budget, I think those people would be pretty darn ticked off if we were to give away free prizes for some stupid survey.

We do have email and web site surveys.

Giving the surveys some color is a possibility, but again that would cost more money.  Black and white costs less.

The surveys are postage paid.

Making the surveys easier is not possible.  They are already pretty easy.  Although that gives me an idea - we could make them shorter.  Cut it down from 4 questions to 2.

Printing black ink on colored paper is often the same price or only a minor difference in price. Check with your printer to be sure.

I'm sorry, I don't remember what kind of business you're in, but would it be possible for employees to personally ask the questions and get responses?  I've spent 1 hour in our lobby asking our customers survey questions and it seemed to have worked.  Our company just asked for employees from various services to "volunteer" 1 hour of their time to do the surveys.  The surveys are done once a quarter, and the same individuals don't have to do it each quarter, so it spreads out the work of doing the survey.  And the bosses are generally good about letting you have that hour away from the desk when it's only once in a while and for the company.  Might be an idea.  No additional costs, use the same forms you already have, just route some manpower to handle the questions.
