Title: Abbreviation - Million Post by: möve on March 12, 2003, 02:42:05 pm Hi Y'all,
what is the correct (or at least the most common) abbreviation for a million? My salary ought to be 1 mil 1 mil. 1 m 1 M or what else? Title: Re: Abbreviation - Million - Deja Vu Post by: countrigal on March 12, 2003, 08:15:37 pm Sueg22, that's exactly what came to my mind first when seeing this post. And what I gathered from that previous post was:
a) if you're an accountant, you tend to use "mm" b) general abbreviation is "m" c) and that we can get so much interesting information through these questions. ![]() CountriGal Peer Moderator Title: Re: Abbreviation - Million - Deja Vu Post by: jahdra on March 12, 2003, 08:22:47 pm M the Roman numeral for a thousand. So 1MM would be a thousand thousand or one million. Remember, the Romans had no concept of 0, that was an Arabic invention, along with algebra.
Title: Re: Abbreviation - Million Post by: execsec on March 12, 2003, 09:29:35 pm According to my Gregg Reference Manual (p. 131), to express large numbers in abbreviated form (metric style), you would say 1M; M stands for mega, signifying millions.
Title: Re: Abbreviation - Million Post by: blufire21 on March 12, 2003, 09:46:28 pm OK guys, according to my guy here at work, who knows EVERYTHING, it is 1M. He said it's in the AP Stylebook.

Thank you for your help. Moeve ![]() Title: Re: Abbreviation - Million Post by: countrigal on March 13, 2003, 11:02:30 pm Searching can get tricky sometimes, and also depends on which forum you search. Anyway, this way you got more of a census of what is "standard" and not just what is "right".
![]() Oh what information we can share! CountriGal Peer Moderator Title: Re: Abbreviation - Million Post by: emcmanus on March 14, 2003, 11:41:23 am Our credit department alway uses the abbreviation mio for million, not sure why this is though!
