Title: Storms in the North
Post by: smitkit on January 29, 2002, 12:09:19 am
Hi to all our Northern friends

I've just seen the terrible reports on the news of the storms you're having, especially in Scotland.  The coastal areas look dreadful.  We've got high winds here in Nottingham, but at least you can walk outside without getting knocked over.

With all the trees and masonry flying about, I hope everyone is safe, and isn't planning on taking risks on getting to work tomorrow.

Hi......report from Aberdeen.

Today hardly any wind at all, now it's snowing!

Yesterday however was a totally different story - many lorries in the area were blown over and upon leaving work, I think most had decided to park up for the evening, as all access roads were closed to those types of vehicles.

I think Aberdeen got off fairly lightly compared to farther north, and indeed central areas.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hello

Just thought I'd throw in my tuppence worth.

It is snowing heavily today, and I'm working from home - thank goodness.  I can see cars and lorries struggle to get around, but it looks like the sky is clearing - so fingers crossed there'll be no more.

Luckily I'm off to Dubai in 6 days time - for a month - the weather will be quite different from here.

Best regards

Margaret

Adding to the other Aberdonians postings.

I work in the centre of town, however I passed 3 lorries lying on their sides nearby my home this morning enroute to work, the 'left-overs' from yesterday's high winds.

Snow is here in abundance, however let's hope it is short-lived.

All the best

The cultural difference do make me laugh, I quite often puzzle over a comment or a word someone has used in the hub trying to work out if it's a typo or something I just don't understand!!

I once saw a German lorry (or truck ;-) with a VERY rude word emblazoned in 3 foot letters down the side ... the poor driver must have been laughed at, at every stop he made!

Smitkit, just remember that anytime the cultural differences get you puzzled, just ask out -- we're always glad to explain our own words as often as we are to query y'alls.  And don't my Southern writing just make it soooo much simplier to read and understand?  Hope y'all have a good day!
