Nearly two months after being sacked, I was offered a job earlier this week and I accepted. I've had several interviews at other places and was relieved not to be called back for a second interview at any of them; this was the only opportunity I thought was worth pursuing. I'm kind of grateful to have been unemployed during this time as I had to go back for THREE interviews, each one lasting more than an hour. That would have been much harder to do if I were working.

I was pretty sure about ten minutes into the second interview that I would be hired; it just seemed that the team met me more than halfway and that they weren't all blowing smoke, which was such a relief. Also, it's not a corporation--it's a large nonprofit affiliated with a university--which keeps me out of that corporation mindset that so depressed me. Woohoo!

And...you'll all recall my last job where I was cobbling together workable furniture out of odds and ends, cleaning the kitchen and emptying the garbage myself, being made to do loads of telemarketing, etc. This position is a bit more to my liking, and they have normal furniture, working printers and a regular cleaner (although I believe we take turns doing the fridge ourselves). There is some outbound calling, but it's not part of my job AT ALL. What a relief.

So, aside from the usual pre-job jitters, somewhat amplified because I've been away from work for so long, I'm feeling much more optimistic. And what's really lovely is that I landed this on my own with no help from the agency (they treated me badly) or my old boss (who pointed me to an "opportunity" I did not want--DURING the meeting where I was sacked). I just watched the organization's website and applied as soon as I saw an opening.

Thank goodness.

All the best to you for a new successful venture!  Glad you don't need to empty the trash anymore--if that's what you wanted to do for a living, you would have been doing it!

Congratulations, Dettu!  What splendid news, and I wish you every success in your new job.

It's great that you have obtained a position after being sacked - that's demoralising enough, but the economic climate at the moment isn't terribly good for job seekers.

I had a laugh or two about your remarks about furniture and cleaning.  I have had that experience, too, of "making do" with whatever is available and resorting to getting out the vacuum cleaner, dusters etc when our offices were not done.  The stupidest thing, though, I ever encountered was in a post I had some years ago.  I was working for a charity and was not allowed to have my own stapler.  There was ONE stapler for the entire company. Admittedly, it was a small company, but we were sited over three floors and twelve rooms.  Hunting down the stapler certainly kept me fit!

Dettu, well done you!  I know it's hard, but all good things come to those who wait.

Go girl!

Thanks, everyone. I'm a little nervous about my first day, but looking forward to it overall. Adding to my positive impressions of this place is the fact that an acquaintance of mine knows my new boss and seems to like her very much--says my whole team will be great to work with. Woohoo!
