Do you use apps on your phone/tablets for business use?  If so which ones?  What are the real latest and greatest apps?

Nope.  My phone is for personal use, as it is a personal phone.  Sorry company, but if they want me to use it, then they can provide it.   ;)   Now, for personal use... got lots of apps, but none I would deem as the newest and greatest, just great for me.  ;D

Countrigal, are you kidding or what!!!  I could not survive the day without Angry Birds for business use (I vent my frustration at some of the idiotic stuff the bosses ask me to do on the Angry Birds rather than going tonto in the office!).  It is a win-win scenario!  ;D

Ah now I know why Angry Birds was invented! :D

I gave up my game apps for lint.  I was way too involved in tap fish!  However it was soothing to look at a pretty fish tank when my office was tanking.  (Sorry couldn't resist the pun.)  Words with friends was getting way to competitive and not fun.  I agree my iPhone is for personal use and only if my company pays for it am I going to use it for work.  It is one of my pet peeves that fellow admins text their bosses in meetings and I have been asked to do the same.  I tell them politely I have to pay per text and I'm not going to do it.  Plus frankly I think it's rude to be tethered to a crackberry during a meeting. 
I have taken my iPad to non work committee meetings, presentations, web surfing and a note taking app have come in very handy.  Penultimate is the note app I use and I ordered a $5 stylus pen from Amazon.  I haven't made the leap to mac pages etc for the iPad due to cost and I wonder how much I would use it.  But with the cloud I'm sure over the summer I will explore those options.

Atlanta, just an fyi, but you can almost always send a text message from an email account or from the provider's website, not just phones. You just need the full address (ie. number@sprint.com). I know that doesn't address the rudeness of receiving texts during meetings, but sometimes it is necessary.

JessW.... ya know... never played AngryBirds, never had it on a phone, and never thought it was something I'd like... but now that you pointed it out, that might be a great use!  :)

Pocket Whip is a nice sound effect app that regularly amuses me.  It was free!

Can I ask how many of us -

a) have a phone for business use provided by our employer?
b) are expected to use such a handset to access apps for company business?

The company phones handed out to management in my company are basic handsets and do not have the facility to download or access apps.  That said, many individuals have chosen to forego the "basic" company phone for their own choice of handset which can download apps.

This has in many ways made their daily working life much easier, as many have downloaded the app provided by our travel agent so they can access itineraries while on the go, including flight times, maps, restaurants etc.

At a difficult time economically I wouldn't have thought many companies would provide such handsets to their employees and I certainly wouldn't expect us as individuals to use our own mobile phones for company use unless we are being rewarded in some way.

My company does give out cell phones to employees who need them. I originally got one when I started but turned it in as no one ever called me. LOL They have iphones, and yes hey can have apps on them. In a different position, I might have used the apps but I don't need them in my current one. I know my boss definitely has the phone and uses many apps for travel/office, etc.

But is it company regulation Marie to be provided with an iphone/smartphone with apps, or just a basic handset?

What is your company policy?  Does your employer feel the need that staff should have an iphone with apps?

We have a number of different phones and the employee can choose which they want, and yes, many (most) of them are smart phones.

The company feels the employee should get the phone that best suits their purposes and it is up the employee (and possibly the supervisor if it's a super high end phone) to determine what that is.

Ok thanks.  In my company, it's one standard phone across the board which is why I guess some have ditched it!

I have a company phone - just a standard one, PAYG.  The number gets used on advertising, out of office hours calls etc.

Personally I have an iphone which I also tend to use for business use as its more convenient for me and I have lots of mins and unlimited texts etc.

The only App which I occasioanlly use for work is Dropbox.

Congratulations!  Now which one to choose from - there are 4 different ones that you can get for free (Angry Birds, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Space)!  ;D

Another vote for Angry Birds. Tried the tap fish game - but somehow lost all my fish in one go - so gave up. Am off to find out about Angry Birds Space - as I don't think I have played that one.

But daaaaaaarliiiiiiiiiing, Angry Birds is so so yesterday - today I is mostly playing Ice Age Village (based on the film and very creative rather than destructive!)

hmmm that is being downloaded now :)

I also got very addicted to Paradise Island but got fed up with how long it took to get the 'pastries'. Going off now to look up Ice Age Village.
