Title: Keyboard options
Post by: venim102 on August 14, 2001, 04:30:00 pm
Does anyone know if you can format the "enter key" on the numerical keypad on a computer keyboard while using Excel?  I would like the enter key to move me from left to right instead of down when entering numbers in the cells.  This way I only have to use one hand.  I am using the "right arrow" key since it is closer than the "tab" key, but was wondering if the "enter" key can be formatted.

I found it!  For those of you who didn't know, go into Excel, open tools, options, edit.  In there you can change the move option after enter to: up, down, left, or right.

My boss did ask me if it can be set up to stay within the current cell after hitting enter.  Why he would want to do this I am not sure, but it can't be done.

Anyway, hope you are all enjoying your week!

There's an add on program for Windows NT that allows you to remap the entire keyboard to your specifications and then return it to its former state with one click. I've used it when I had heavy QA stats to enter into a filemakerpro database.  Saved hours of entry, and was able to vary the repetative pressure on my CTS afflicted wrist...

Just thought you'd want to know, on the off chance you're using NT...

Don't know if this is what he's trying to do, but hitting F2 allows you to edit the text in the cell in Excel so that the arrow keys stay within the cell instead of moving you around the screen.  Hitting enter when you're done moves to the next cell.

Yes, we are using NT.  Will have to look into that program, Andrea.

Beth, I am not sure what boss wanted to do either, but I told him about the other options.  I don't think he knew that.

Thanks, for your help everyone!

Just waking up.....

My boss asked me if this was possible just the other day.

I told him I would check into it. Now I have the answer.

Thank you!
