Up Sticks
If a person Ups Sticks they leave a place and move on to pastures new. They are several possibilities as to the phrase's origin - though either way it probably came from the 1800s. One suggestion relates to the fact that in the days of horse travel a mount would be tethered to the ground by a picket (rope) tied to a stick driven into the earth. These sticks would be carried around by horsemen to be used whenever they stopped somewhere, to be upped again on departure. Another suggestion is that a ship's mast was known as a stick and so when they were raised the vessel was ready to depart.
