How to Make a Great First Impression on an Interview
It’s clichéd but you truly don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. First impressions at job interviews are vital, as they can make or break the interview.
- Be prepared: Research the company and the position you are applying for. Give the impression that you’re serious about the interview by being prepared. Also, prepare yourself physically. Dress and groom yourself in a professional manner.
- Get there early: This one seems so obvious, but it’s a vital mistake many people make. If you aren’t familiar with the site of the interview, consider taking a practice run a few days in advance to gauge any possible traffic and parking congestion. Arrive early enough to be able to relax and compose yourself, but not early enough where you become bored and lose your focus.
- Smile and shake hands firmly: Don’t let nerves get the best of you. Greet your interviewer warmly and politely no matter how they may greet you. Don’t be overly giddy or cheery, but always look interested and excited.
- Answer all questions with firm, confident responses: Avoid looking or sounding overly nervous or shaken if a tough question is answered. Even if you aren’t sure about your reply, speak with conviction.
