What is the perfect Desk Set Up?
Musculoskeletal injuries are considered to be very serious conditions. A lot of RSI-related injuries are irreversible. The site of an RSI injury will always be a weak spot and there is a high possibility that the damage will be permanent. To avoid this, it’s worth taking some time to research the workstation layout and design best suited to your needs. Preventing RSI

The correct technique and posture, the right equipment set-up and good work habits ae thought to be important factors in reducing or even eliminating the possibilities of RSI. The basic posture principles are:
  • Posture needs to be neutral with the neck aligned with the spine
  • Shoulders should be relaxed
  • Elbows need to be at the side
  • Wrists in neutral
  • There shouldn’t be pressure points on chair and
  • Sufficient knee clearance
  • The top of the screen needs to be at eye levels
  • The screen should be positioned straight ahead
  • Keyboard at about elbow height
  • A foot rest has to be used if it is considered to be necessary
You should keep in mind that there is no single posture appropriate or correct for an eight-hour day since the human body needs to be changed and moved. It is very crucial to have a good starting position from which you can move into other positions that are safe. What needs to be avoided at all costs is furniture that squeezes us into an uncomfortable and contorted body posture.

Emerging research on posture can be found at Office-ergo.com as well as illustrated guidelines for workstation placement. Even though a number of other sites on the web contain guidelines which are somewhat different, the general principles will always be the same

Table height

The chair needs to be adjusted properly to the table height, so that a recommended height of between 27-29 inches is guaranteed. Depending on the difference in height of the individual an adjustable table can be set to ensure that the elbows are at a 90 elbow-degree angle when the hands are on the keyboard with the waist angle always at 90 degrees.

Wrist angle

Keyboard should be properly positioned and you need to ensure that your wrists rest comfortably on the table in front of you. Whilst typing, you should not rest your wrists on anything. Moreover, wrists should never be bent to the side. Instead, fingers should be in a straight line with forearm when viewed from above. To achieve this easier keep the back edge of the keyboard titled down.

Elbow angle

To make sure whether you need to adjust the height of the seat of your chair you should proceed as follows: Rest your hands comfortably at the keyboard and position your upper arms vertically. Now, measure the angle between your forearm and your upper arm (the elbow angle). If you find it is less than 90 degrees, raise the seat of your chair. If the angle is greater than 90 degrees you should lower the seat. You need to hold your elbows as close to your sides as possible to minimise the sideways bending of the wrist.

Waist angle

Place your elbow at a 90 degrees angle and measure the angle between your upper legs and your spine (the waist angle). This has to be about 90 degrees. If it is less than this, your chair may be too low and your knees, therefore, too high.

Feet

Your feet should rest comfortably flat on the floor if your elbows and waist are at 90 degrees angle. If they don't you should adjust your chair and table height and repeat the steps above. If your table isn't adjustable and your feet don't comfortably reach the floor, a raised footrest can be used to achieve this.
