That means choosing the best paper for the job and making sure you get the results you need. Here are our top tips.
Which paper do you need?
Our mini paper audit is a quick way to help you find the right paper for the job. There are two key things you need to know: What's it for and how it's printed.
How will the paper be used?
- What do you want to produce?
- Is it a high impact project where perceived value is important?
- Will the paper be used mainly for internal or external use?
- Is it for colour or black-and-white printing?
- Will imagery and graphics be used in large amounts?
- Does the paper need to be pre-printed, for example letterhead?
- Is the paper needed for archiving?
Now you know the type of projects the paper is needed for, you should identify the type of printing technology to be used.
- Are colour laser printers and copiers the main technology used?
- Will colour inkjet printing be the predominant technology used?
- Should the paper work on all your office equipment?
- Does the paper need to available and suitable for office and commercial printing equipment?

Taking care of paper
- Always store paper in a dry place.
- Avoid keeping paper in high temperatures or near heaters.
- Keep the paper in its original protective packaging.
- Avoid leaving unused paper in machines for long periods, like weekends.
- Do not fan or straighten the paper.
- For consistency in all communications choose a paper that is available in a wide range of weights and sizes.
- For double-sided use, it is best to use a paper of 90 gsm or above.
- When using a large amount of text and imagery, choose a heavier weight paper.
- Use gloss and matt papers to add impact to high profile projects.
- Keep printers and copiers clean and well maintained for trouble-free performance.
- When printing text and images use a 4-colour printer with a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi for best results.
- When printing mainly images set the printer resolution to 240 x 300 dpi.
- For uncoated paper set the printer to "plain" or "normal" settings.
- For coated papers set the printer settings to "photo paper" or the highest quality possible.
- Use the cleaner function on your printer regularly.
