Stress Bust Your Office
Did you know stressful offices have lower productivity and higher staff turnover. And, let's face it, they aren't much fun to work in. But there are lots of simple things you can do to help everyone in your office stay stress-free and happy. Here are some tips to start you thinking.

Feeling good!

  • Start the day with a healthy breakfast and a brisk walk before work.
  • Take lots of short breaks - a quick walk, stretching at your desk or looking out the window all work well.
  • Hang loose - when you notice tension in your body (neck, back, shoulders, jaw) stand up and shake the tension from your body and stretch out.
  • Make sure you have enough energy. Eat regularly and drink lots of water.
  • Look after your eyes - look away from your screen and focus on something outside every 20 minutes or so.
  • Laugh and smile. Every time you laugh you get an endorphin hit that reduces stress.
  • Take at least half an hour for lunch away from your desk.
Office space
  • Personlise your own desk space - make it yours.
  • Get rid of clutter. If you don't really need it, bin it.
  • Organise your desk space for comfort and minimal stress on your body.
  • Use ergonomic keyboards and position so elbows rest at your side parallel to the floor.
  • Get a chair that is right for you. If that's not possible look at some of the ergonomic back supports and cushions or a fitness ball.
  • Make sure your monitor is at eye level or just below.
  • Set up a "Chill Out Zone" - a strictly NO WORK area to relax in with magazines, radio, games and plants.
  • Keep people laughing with a noticeboard for cartoons, jokes and amusing pictures.
Getting things done
  • Don't procrastinate. Do the jobs you want to avoid first thing in the morning and get them out of the way.
  • Get organised and prioritise so you can concentrate on the important things.
  • Say "No" with a smile. Don't take on more than you can manage. Be honest.
  • Get fresh. Take a walk or do some brainstorming in the fresh air. It'll clear the cobwebs and get your mind working.
  • Change your attitude. Don't get stressed….be challenged!
  • Organise a work social activity - Friday lunch, evening drinks or a sporting event.
At home
  • Leave work at work - get out of work mode as soon as you leave the office.
  • Try something new - yoga, pilates, meditation, tai chi or something more active like kickboxing.
