The Art of Folding a Letter

  • If you wish to be strictly proper insert the open, or unfolded edge, first.
  • If the envelope is as deep as half the length of the paper, the paper should be neatly folded once (i.e. in half)
  • If the envelope is only a third as deep, the paper should be folded twice.
  • Paper that must be folded into thirds is usually only used as personal stationery for men or for business purposes.
  • Women's personal letter paper should fold only once and fit into its envelope.
  • Notepaper is the same size as the envelope and goes into it flat with only the original fold.
