registration table supplies

I need your advice on how to throw this together - and I'm not sure I'm going to do a very good job of explaining what it is I need, so bear with me...
Have you ever gone to an event, and there are registration tables divided up by alphabet (like A-D, E-H, etc.), and you know which table to go to because there is a large card with the A-D printed on it, and the card is held in a stand that sits on the table?
I need those stands. Am I going to have to make them??? I need them for a luncheon on Friday.
There are no alternatives. Can't tape signs above the registration table - the tables will be out in the middle of a room. Don't want to tape signs to the front of the tables - by the time you have 2 people standing in front of the table you can't see the signs.
HELP PLEASE! Thanks!

What about a plate stand? Like the kind you display decorative Elvis plates on?

What I'm thinking of holds the cards up about 3 feet off the tale - like on a dowel.

Is this what you are thinking of or is it too big?

Helium balloons with the letters on - you can make them go as high as you need them so they can be seen over people's heads. You can weight them down with anything, but I make my own by putting plaster of Paris or quick dry cement in paper cups and slipping a washer or a hook in before they are quite dry.
Alternately, you could use card and make support at the back by either making them a triangle or by putting an arm on like a picture frame and adding some blu-tack to hold them in place. Picture frames would work as well I suppose.

Call your local florist, tell her you need to purchase some long Card pics, (think like the ones you card is held on when you get a floral arrangement, only three times as long, used for when a florist does say, a dozen roses, where cards need to be up higher.)
They come with a point on the end, Find something you'd like to embed said point in, a mug, some playdoh, a copy of the latest annual report. Embed said point, affix card to prongs at the top,,,, *poof! instant higher than usual way to hold a card.

Marie - that's definitely the right idea. I looked at the table models, and they are about the right size & all that, but they need to be taller.

I love helium balloons. Every party I do the decorations for I choose some colours and buy decorators balloons in those pearly colours with that decorative parcel ribbon that you can make curl to tie them on to the weights with. I spray the weights a colour as well. For my parent's silver wedding I chose silver (obviously), peach for the flowers in my mother's wedding bouquet and dark blue for contrast. For my Granny's 90th I used pink and dark blue (are we sensing a theme here?) and used those long crepe streamers you can twist in the same colours.
Table confetti is also a great invention, especially now it's popular and cheaper.
Mind you, the last time I did a party I spent ages wrapping up sugared almonds in paper doilies. The doilies were too small really so not only were there only three almonds in each one, they were rock solid! They looked pretty, but the next time I am buying lace!

Alternatively for the helium balloon weights, you can use a colored latex balloon filled with sand (to make it about baseball sized-ish) and tied on to the ribbons.

Just an FYI to all...those acrylic stands can be purchased almost anywhere, they're pretty common picture frames. But a good place to find any ot that stuff is Paper Direct,
www.paperdirect.com
. They sell the acrylic stands (both photo and landscape) and all manor of papers, cards and flyers to personalize with. I still use mine for all kinds of things...definately one of the best investmenst I had our company make.
