I have two monitors, and thus two desktops working as one... and keep many files shortcutted to there.  9 are shortcuts to programs that I have to use to do my job, proprietory programs that is.  Then Excel documents, Word documents and Powerpoint documents that I use regularly (read many times a day) so have shortcutted to my desktop.  Then there are the file folders that I have shortcutted there, just so I can open a specific file location with one click instead of several as I drill out on the network to the appropriate file.  Oh my... on my "reference" desktop, I have over 50 files shortcutted to it... luckily these are large monitors, and I use a small font, so these don't cover the screen but just run down the side in 5 rows... giving me a clear view of my collage of pics of my kittens I put together.
