Your company probably takes the position that if you take even one sick day it "meets expectations." They don't care what you did in previous years. Even if you went 10 years with perfect attendance, if you miss one day in a year you will get an ME. Doesn't seem fair, but, like I always told my kids -- life's not fair. If it's any consolation (yeah, I know it's not really!) the policy is probably administered equally to all employees.
