1  General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Do you have a Desk Manual? on: August 18, 2008, 02:17:56 pm
I made one several years ago when I was going to be out for several weeks due to surgery.  Mine contains basically an overview of everything I could think of that someone filling in for me would need to know - names of co-workers and their spouses, where files are located on the computer, examples of proposals, passwords to common things like refilling the postage meter, Fedex, etc., and so on.  I really need to update it though as some of the info in it has changed.  It's really handy for me also since I can never remember my UPS login and password.

Job files are still the plain manilla folders.  DOT files are red, asbestos worker files are blue, folder I put on Bossies desk for items needing his signature are either red or yellow (whatever I have empty, just a bright color he'll notice).   I love the colored folders, not that it makes filing any more fun.

I've noticed it in some of the positions advertised in the local newspaper.  One in particular wanted someone to be in charge of payroll, A/R, and A/P, yet was only willing to pay them $8.00 per hour. Maybe I've been doing this too long, but to me that seemed more like an entry level, bottom floor salary.

Usually about every 2 weeks I'll dust really good and vacuum my office (we're all responsible for our own areas).  I'll also straighten and dust the reception area as it needs it.

Reading the other post about "Cost of Living vs Wages", I just wondered, what is everyone paying for gasoline in their area (US and UK).  I'm in Mississippi and filled up earler this week, price was $3.93 per gallon.

Usually safe (I've been at the same job for 26 years).  However, this week I took a risk and sent in a resume for a job I saw listed in the newpaper.  Now I'm going through the "did I really do that?!" thought!

OK, we haven't had any smelly workers, but we did have a Fedex man that smelled SO GOOD, we'd all run into the hall after he walked through the building just to get a whiff of the lingering scent!!  I don't know what cologne he used but it was wonderful.

Loni Anderson's character from "WKRP".  I loved how she was always scheduling a meeting between her boss and the stapler, lightbulb, etc. saleman

#2 - I'm not sure if it's correct grammer wise, but to me it sounds better.

Congrats on the job!!

Speaking of shoes, my hubby asked me last week what was in all the shoe boxes in my closet.  My reply was "shoes of course".  He wanted to know why I needed so many pairs, he said he gets by with just 3 different pairs!  Go figure!

I have one that I've named "Office Info and Procedures".  It has most of the same information yours has, basically all the info a temp could use to get by in case I'm out for any length of time.

Our company moved to a new office, in a new town about 15 minutes away from the old one.  So now its a new route to work (I did get a new, more reliable car though!), new scenery, and still searching for new places to order lunch that are eatable!!
