I cried too. I always try to remember all the wonderful things my son has brought me over his
7 1/2 years. He was born 2 1/2 months premature and weighed 2 lbs 10 oz and was definately a miracle for me and my husband. When my husband and I are fighting/talking about money and the lack thereof and my husband brings up all we were able to do when we did not have our son, I remind him of all that he has brought to our lives and that money should not matter but happiness should.
Thank you for reminding me that my son is worth every penny we spend on him and the money we do not spend on him while doing his favorite thing (we go to Friendly for ice cream every Tuesday while my husband is at Weight Watcher - just the two of us) is just as special.

Yankee,
You sound like my father-in-law. He passed away 3 years ago but the thing I remember most about him is that he always loved me - I am not sure though if it is because I am nice or because I like to eat. Everytime we saw him for dinner he always said to me, do you want more and before I could say no, he would be cutting more meat or adding more potato to my plate and then how could I say no. He was such a great man and loved to eat.
Holidays with my family always meant eating and eating way too much. Then we would all go for a walk and walk some of it off just to eat more.
I miss those days so much but now we made our own traditions which of course include food.
Have a great Christmas and spend and eat as much as you want.

I agree!! I really hate the snow. Hopefully next winter we will be in sunny Florida and I will not have to worry about the snow.
I live in NJ and we should be getting more snow this afternoon - which means another messy drive home (although I live only 5 minutes from work- I still hate to drive in it).
Have a great day.

Just a couple of days ago, I received a letter from my son's school district about an incident that happened at our high school (this is the same school that I graduated from about 15 years ago).
One of the students had a gun in his possession and was talking with other students about his intentions with his gun. Thank goodness, an adult heard the conversation and called the school district and the students were smart enough to call the school district and the student was taken out of the school and was proscecuted. The student now is on probation from school until an investigation and hearing is complete (I assume that means he will not be allowed in the school until at least the end of the school year).
It scares me a lot to think that in my neighborhood their would be a student "stupid" enough to try something like bringing a gun to school.
We have been talking with our 8 year old son since the shootings were televised and he was in school about violence and what he should do if he ever hears another kid talking about such violence. He said he understood what I said but I was not sure until one day he came home from school so proud of himself. He told me that another kid on his bus was talking about hurting someone and talking about fighting and that he had guns at home, etc. My son and 2 other kids on the bus heard his whole conversation and went to the principals office and told her the whole story. The kid was sent home and was not allowed back until he got some help (not sure of what that was though). I was so proud of him for standing up and letting an adult know of a bad situation.
I could go on and on with this subject but I must stop.

Congratulations on your new job. If you go into Monster.com and into the career center, job seeker resources and cover letters - there you will find resignation letters as well as any other letters you may need.
I hope this helps.

I am working in a temp/hire position and hopefully will be getting hired soon. My boss is great for the most part. Why I think he is great: we are close to the same age (I am about 4 years older than he is) so we can talk on the same level most of the time. He gets me involved in departmental meetings and asks me what I think about certain issues. He has a great sense of humor which makes the day go by faster (except for Monday when I have learned to leave him alone).
What I would change: he needs to learn a little faster about what to give me for work. I believe though, that when I get hired I will have more duties because their are certain things that I just cannot do because I am a temp (one project is actually on hold until I get hired because I cannot access a system that is needed).

Hello, I hope you can help. I am in a temp/hire situation with the possibility of getting hired within the next couple of weeks - which is great news (I think!). As of right now, I am not busy 3/4 of the time in fact, looking at the TAA is all I have to do some days. But for the most part, I try to keep busy as much as possible to make the day go by faster (I made a desk bible, created spreadsheets, practiced powerpoint, etc) and I ask my boss at least once a day if he need for me to do anything and I check his calendar to make sure if I can help him with something.
The problem I am having is my boss' management style. Currently, my job on a daily basis is to tracking the coming and going of a group that work in another state. They actually have to send an e-mail to say when they are in the office and when they leave. People in the group are leaving because of the lack of trust.
The reason this is bothering me so much is that I have been through a similar situation at another company. I just had my premature son and needed to take time off because we were both getting sick. After about a month of this they transferred me to another department because I was not living up to their expectations. I did not leave because I did not have another job and I needed the unemployment. They were watching every move I did and tracked my comings and going just like my boss is doing now, I felt violated and not trusted eventhough I had a legitimate reason for not being in the office - just like they do (at least most of the time). They finally fired me and was able to collect unemployment which gave me the time to be with my baby and gave me what I needed.
I am sure that some of these people are going through similar things that I went through and the treatment they are receiving is the last thing they need in their lives.
The problem that I am having is that I am not sure if I want to get hired on in this position and risk the same management problems that I have had in the past. I really need the benefits and the extra income that this job will give me and do not have the luxery to quit and then find another job. I was thinking that I would get hired and then look around the company and/or at other jobs outside and interview after work. I do not think I can handle another job with the same type of management style as my old job for long.
Sorry for the long post but I really needed to vent. What do you think? What are your thoughts?
Thanks for "listening"
Susan

Thank you so much for your quick responses. I did go to my agency and the company I am working with has given her no responses other than they are working on the budget still and will get back to her. My agency is getting more and more upset because they are dragging their feet.
My main problem is that I really need benefits and more money and I know that when I get hired I will get both.
I received an e-mail a little while ago from the new head administrative assistant who spoke with my boss about me and she is pushing for me to get hired. That is a little relief but I am still a temp with no benefits. I guess I am losing my patients and will give the company another week and then I will start my search for a new job (permanent only).
Thanks again for your help and happy new year!

I have been working for this company for a little over 5 months now as a temp on a temp/hire position. My boss and I get along very well and he likes my work and everything seems fine.
My problem is this, I took this job with a paycut just because I was promised that this job if they liked me, would turn perm within 5 months. It is now way over this timeframe and still I have not been hired. I know that my boss wants to hire me but as of a few weeks ago, they were still working on the budget and are not sure if they have the money budgeted for me.
What should I do? How do I go about talking with my boss and tell him that I need to get an answer if I will or will not be hired soon because I need the benefits and want to be able to stay. We have a good relationship but I have always been non-assertive and it has been difficult for me to ask for what I need and want in a job.
Thank you for your help.

This year, I will not be getting a bonus (Chanukah) because I am a temp but last year every employee got a new $100 bill. One year, all employees received a $500 bonus (boy did that help). Hopefully next year, I will be in a job situation that I will get a bonus.

I worked for a company that had an entire day for bring your kids to work day. They gave out balloons, showed science experiments, had a special lunch for the kids and parent and gave out samples of the gum they made. It was such a great day spending it with my son. I am hoping the company I work for now, will have a day for our kids.

I like some of the others, enjoy working in the United States. Although, I have thought about it many times about how it would be to work in a different country. I do think that you need to be special in order to work in a different country but not because you need to have excellent skills but because you need to be able to adjust to new ways of doing things, new ways of thinking, etc.
I am sure that when I grow in my career and my abilities and my self-esteem rises, I will think differently about whether or not I could handle this type of change, but for now, I will be staying in the USA.

I was born in 1966 - my father brought home a manual typewriter once but I only used it once but never in a classroom. When I went to secretarial school in 1985, we learned how to use carbons correctly and how to make changes if you made an error (boy was that a hassle). I also learned how to use a computer - a Wang and an electronic typewriter which had a mini screen so you can make changes before you print your letter.
I worked for an insurance company in the mid to late 80's where we used carbon packs and carbonless insurance forms. The only difference was that you did not get the black ink from the carbon on the carbonless forms. I remember having several colors of "whiteout" so "if" you made an error, you could correct each page - sometimes it was easier to just start from the beginning (some of the forms were numbered so you would have to mark down that you voided a form due to an error).
Thank goodness for computers and the spellcheck.
