PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
There could be a long list of personal characteristics (tact, diplomacy, tolerence, patience, proactiveness, familiarity with procedures, detail-oriented, confidentiality, planning and organization, tracking and follow-up, prioritization, communication, helpful, cooperative, team player etc etc) but I think that one word that can capture the true spirit of all these traits is "EXPERIENCE" which could be the ultimate edge for a candidate to be successful in large corporates.

KEY DIFFERENCES IN ENVIRONMENTS
Global corporates usually have fast and challenging working environments with greater work pressures but have brighter prospects and excellent working conditions.

Personal Assistant is more responsible secretarial position that provides assistance to executive management in sharing/easing their work load. Usually Personal Assistant is provided with a secretary or subordinate for routine work such as filing, typing, etc.

I also remembered same debate in the same forum and succeeded in searching the required thread which deals with the questions you are posing. It is in the name of "PA or Secretary" dated 13/1/03.

Many congrats. We had our appraisals 2002 done in end Dec (got a rating of '1' - the outstanding) but still waiting for the raise.

Just checking on Ellen (in TX)'s point, how would all others here see an excellent recognition of efforts in appraisal with no or very little salary increase.

Don't exactly know but guess (a calculated one) it is related to data entry i.e. typing speed of keys available on numeric key pad (0 to 9).

I feel somewhat uncomfortable with this as I am confusing this theory between career and position. Maybe because it has not reached Pakistan yet formally. As far as Secretary as a career is concerned I think I am a ‘first wave’ and would remain so as I adopted this career as my first and last, whereas Secretary as a position is concerned I am a “second wave” and would remain so. Though my current position is neither entry level nor a stepping-stone one, rather an executive management support.

Assuming that the theory exists and there are two camps, than the difference of opinion. Lioness has put some valid arguments for the resentment in two groups.

Synergy: Could DD (forums) be a step in that direction??

I think conversion from one camp to other is an automatic process and to and fro conversion would go on and rather increase in view of the current economy and lay-offs situation where we have to fight for the survival irregard of the 2 theories.

I am of the opinion that art imitates life (meaning life impacts art). I would put this film as a not so simple love-story where two complex characters find clicking of their chemistry in each other’s personalities and professions (fortunately or unfortunately being boss and secretary). Somewhere in the backdrop of making this film, some famous sexual fantasies (boss-secretary; teacher-student; doctor-nurse etc) would have been instrumental (director/producer’s thoughts matter) probably due to their intimate relationship though VERY different (not a BIT different) in nature in reality and could have been filmed on other professions too (also pointed out by someone else). Most of the replies to my understanding seem as stereotyping the secretarial profession in the film, but I thought (as read from various reviews of this film on the web), it can’t be so due to the main reason that the heroine role (her boyfriend too) has been shown as psycho - far from normal - and should not be generalized. Regarding award to the film, I think the jury did not think on the lines what we are thinking. The MAIN element of such award adjudication is usually the treatment of the film by the director (which most of the reviewers of this film commended a lot).
