1  General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: What is your busy time of the year? on: January 11, 2013, 12:53:44 pm
Ah, those were the days!  Thank gawd I don't have to worry about that particular problem at the moment.  I am only ever busy when I have won a new client/job!  At the moment, just got the one ongoing hourly and that particular team is being quiet at the moment!  Cheesy

Hello OfficePA!

Personal desk fan!  That way you stay cool whilst the others can stew!

Also (or instead), if you have office air-con, you could ask for whoever is in charge to open up the vents nearest to you a bit more so that you can stay cooler whilst the others can keep warm!

Two possible solutions to think about.

Hope that helps a bit!

3  General Discussion / The Humour Zone / New one about tomatoes with no email! on: December 11, 2012, 01:15:40 pm
I just had to share this one with everyone - it is too funny for words!

Read on ... but put whatever you are drinking down beforehand!  You have been warned!

An unemployed man goes to try for a job with Microsoft as a cleaner.

The manager there arranges for an aptitude test (Section: Floors, sweeping and cleaning).

After the test, the manager says:

You will be appointed on the scale of $30 per day.

Let me have your e-mail address, so that I can send a form to complete and advic...e you where to report for work on your first day.

Taken aback, the unemployed man protests that he is neither in possession of a computer nor of an e-mail address.

To this the MS manager claims the man cannot exist (without an email address) and can therefore hardly expect to be employed. Stunned, the man leaves.

Not knowing where to turn and only having about $10 left, he decides to buy a 10kg box of tomatoes at the supermarket.

Within less than 2 hours, he sells the tomatoes singly at 100% profit.

Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 before going to sleep that night. And thus it dawns on the man that he could quite easily make a living selling tomatoes. Getting up early and earlier every day and going to bed late and later, he multiplies his hoard of profits in quite a short time.

Not too long thereafter, he acquires a cart to transport several dozen boxes of tomatoes, only to have to trade it in again shortly afterwards on a pick-up truck. By the end of the second year, he is the owner of a fleet of pick-up trucks and manages a staff of a hundred former unemployed people, all selling tomatoes.

Considering the future of his wife and children, he decides to buy some life insurance.

Calling an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. At the end of the telephone conversation, the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order that he might forward the documentation.

When the man replies that he has no e-mail, the adviser is stunned:

"What, you don't even have e-mail?

How on earth have you managed to amass such wealth without the Internet, e-mail and e-commerce?

Just imagine where you would have been by now, if you had been connected from the very start!"

After a moment's silence, the tomato millionaire replied: "Sure! I would have been a cleaner at Microsoft!"  Cheesy
4  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: manager snapping and generally being rude. Stay or go? on: December 11, 2012, 11:13:13 am
Sy

Been it and seen it!  I know what you mean (I am also getting similar problems related to me from former colleagues).
Normal?  Well ... cannot possibly say, however have you asked yourself why snappy (on any particular day or moment) then happy?  There could be things going on (either personal or professional) that could have absolutely nothing to do with you/your colleagues etc.  There is no knowing about those things and nothing to do but go with the flow!

I had a boss who treated me like dirt for about 5 months (it turned out his relationship with his partner was on sticky grounds and I was bearing the brunt of it!).  The guy later on 'came round' and our working relationship improved, but he never did explain or apologise - I never expected an apology, and was therefore not disappointed.

Have you spoken to any of her longer-standing colleagues to find out what the story is?  It may be revealing, and could put your mind at rest!  Worth a try at least!

Just my initial thoughts though, so please feel free to ignore them if they are irrelevant!

Sorry, is that not the Monster Raving Loony Party?  That is pretty much why I signed up to them, except you missed out the free beer for all!

No, only joking.  Good ideas - I would certainly prefer that as a basis for any party, but would have to add that local candidates for local areas with local accountability should be at the top of the list - nobody representing an area that they knew nothing about (and cared even less) but for the fact that their Party said it was a safe seat!

I would also add that career politicians would be banned - if they want to get into politics as a career, they are obviously not considering the welbeing of their constituents!

Just my soapbox moment - hope I didn't offend anyone (really, truly hope that!)

13  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Reading packs, weekend packs and overnight packs help on: October 16, 2012, 08:13:43 am
Sy

Sounds like your bossie could do with an iPad or similar - that way anything she needs to do overnight/weekend etc can be downloaded and can be marked off as done/action required by whoever etc.

Suggest this as an alternative to carrying around paper copies that can be lost/stolen/forgotten/attached to other stuff and the like - very 21st Century!
14  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Reading packs, weekend packs and overnight packs help on: October 15, 2012, 12:07:19 pm
Sy, you need to find out what bossie's parameters are.  You could suggest that not only do you categorise each email as to urgency, but also (where practicable) set deadlines, complete with reminders before the event, for when each action has to be completed etc.  This way, your bossies would have a reminder of, for instance, Management Report re current billing session to be completed by Z, reminder 1 week before, 1 day before, 1 hour before, completed (this would also require link to 'Tasks' menu which could also include any actions that bossie and/or you have to complete to enable said Report to be done!

Just a thought!
