We just set up an entire cubicle system to section off our previously open floor plan, so I now have my own "space".  I now stare at a cubilce wall, rather than every single person who walks by, which I am hoping will curb the constant interruptions--though, without a door, certain people still come by with every little question...

Also, it would be nice to have a more stable floor so I wouldn't hear/feel every time a person walked by.

That is cute.  I've had far too many e-mails from folks who clearly trusted their spell checker more than their own eye...

3  General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Typing: Speed vs Accuracy on: March 03, 2008, 06:17:49 pm
I would say speed is less of an issue for me, as I'm not sitting typing documents all day.  If I was, clearly the more I got done, the better.  As it is, however, typing documents is only a fragment of what I do, so my 50 wpm vs. any other speed makes little difference in the overall time I contribute to documents.  Accuracy is my objective--I can't stand sending anything out with errors.

Hey, that's awesome!  Well done.  What a great boost--both the promotion, and the appreciation you've garnered in the other supervisors.

P.S.  Share the love--how did you get the smilies to work?

I've had a couple bosses ask me to sign their name to something.

7  General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Is there any time that it is "ok" to cry at work? on: January 21, 2008, 06:03:49 pm
I think the vague sentence of "It all depends" is appropriate here.

I work for a small non-profit that does very specialized work that we are all somewhat emotionally involved in (I find that very few people who work in non-profits are there without some heart for the cause).  With that in mind, I think all my co-workers have shed tears at one time or another, and everyone understands.

On the other hand, I once worked in an on-site office for a construction company...you can bet that was a difficult environment to work in.  Mainly I had a hard time with the language used, and once when the foreman really lost it on another coworker I was so upset I just got up and walked out.  I walked around the block to cry/clear my head and when I came back he had clearly regretted acting in such a way and appologized.  But I think my move in leaving, versus staying and showing tears, etc. was much more appropriate in such an environment.

I think why you're crying and the environment you're in are very important factors.

We have a web page program called Contribute--every Monday I get to proofread/publish everything the content director has prepared the previous Friday, and I am the one who gets to create new "special" pages (within the given template, albeit, but I still get to be a little creative).

I would like to pitch in on the uhs and ums.  I too find myself losing all focus when listening to someone whose speech is littered with them.  When I have to speak and find myself umming, I make a concerted effort to stop.  It will seem terribly unnatural--like you've stopped in an awkward place, but rest assured, you haven't.  The pause will sound natural to your listeners and will keep you from racing through your material (another bad habit of mine).  It's ok to stop yourself, then pick up again when the um has passed :-)
