The question is how late does your friend sleep in?  Is he an early riser?  My reasoning?...  It might be more beneficial for you to work half a day, then return to spend the rest of the day with your friend.  That way you're not wasting some of your time off while your friend is sleeping.  This would allow you to have time with your friend but still make bossie happy that you're in the office if he needs your expertise.  A lot of folks in my office do this and it seems to work great.  I did this when I had company the last time and loved it.  I arranged to come in a little early so that I could leave before lunch and by the time my company was up, showered, and ready to motivate I was home.
