I have a quandery. . .

My boss has spoken to me about a request he has had from the MD re another part of the Group who has lost / is losing his PA and whether the Md can speak to me about transferring over.

Background:  I have since startin ghere, gone through three internal transfers none of which improved my situation in any way shape or form.  This move would be (from start to finish) Quantity surveying to Construction Legal Services to Management Consulting to Construction Legal Services to (next move?) Project Management (all secretarial by the way).

Intention:  I want to get something out of this other than having to work North of the river (longer bus ride in the morning even if it is still the same bus route).

Question:  What questions should I be looking to ask to help with improving my lot (time / money / benefits and the like)?  I know that if I don't prepare chances are I will get shafted again.

If anyone has been through this sort of thing before and / or used / can remember any good questions they themselves asked or were asked I would appreciate it if you could give me some ideas.

Thanks in advance

(somewhat confused) Jess

I'd definitely start by asking what job requirements would be, and then follow that with questions about training and learning opportunities that would be offered with the job.  Sometimes forthright questions help more than anything else in these types of situations.  Have you talked to your current boss about goals you have?  I've always started in any position by lining out my goals (long and short term) to my boss and ask that they support me in working towards those.  These could be promotion-type goals, education-type, etc.  If you have spoke to your boss about your goals, maybe that's why he's mentioning this position -- maybe it is a step towards a goal of yours.  It appears to be a time where asking the questions directly will not hurt you, as you are not being pushed out of your current job but are being recommended for a different position within the company.  But definitely get an idea of what the job requirements/expectations would be (and this should include grade or salary type info).

Well, here's the ginney!

No internal transfer as potential new boss is leaving.

This leaves me with NO WORK NOW  and NOW POTENTIAL JOB (boohoohoo), plus nobody is telling me anything.  I have already checked out the redundancy info from both my brother and sister in law (both solicitors).

Could anyone spare a bit of time to check out my revamped CV as I am going off my head and have probably made some really stupid mistakes which trying to sell myself?

Thanks in advance

Jess (this is really getting me down 'cos I am running out of cheer up jokes to tell myself)

Hi Jess

This is a bit of a nightmare for you but I'm sure you'll get through it and hopefully go on to bigger and better things.  I'm happy to have a look at your CV if you want to email it to me but don't know how much help I'll be (never done any legal work).  Do you want to stay in the same field of work or try a new industry?

Hi Karz

I would be prepared to do almost anything (experience in legal / construction / management consultancy and education means I have done a lot) and would appreciate any advice.  Often the outside eye, without any inside knowledge, can see the obvious and not be afraid to say it.

Thanks, I know I will survive but for the moment I have to be nice to my nerves - I am carbo-loading big-time at the moment.

Send me your CV - I have reworked CVs for some of my friends and have constantly updated mine since redundancy last year.

Jess, you can send me a copy of it as well at chris68@deskdemon.com.  I'll take a look at it for you.  I've been helping my girlfriend with hers in her search to relocate from within her company as well as keeping mine up to date.
