Not the I'm not safe walking to my car kind of security, but the "I have a coworker who's on the edge and might come back with a gun and blow up the entire building" kind of security.

Do YOU know what to look for? Have you received training, does your company take this as a serious issue?

As far as I know, we don't have any policies in place for that here, but I'm not in HR.  I've never received any training on it.

We, the administrative staff, receive no training for workplace violence, although I did when I worked for a temporary agency.

I think the firm was made more aware of the possibility of violence when the office manager fired one of the admins and he came across the desk at her. Luckily, the facilities manager happened to be nearby and grabbed him, but that was a close call.

We aren't supposed to let former employees walk around unescorted, either, but people do it all the time. "Oh, she used to work here." Well, ok, but she doesn't NOW, so shouldn't she have an escort or at least a badge?

But then again, the firm is lax about a lot of things besides security.

Actually, the company I work for is VERY big on security.  But the company we used to be wasn't quite as rigid.  And since our office was sent up with a key card entry system, three doors are very secure.  The one right in front of my face (and it's glass!) locks from 5:00 P.M. until 8:30 A.M., and remains open all day.  I can lock it, but if someone had a gun, well, draw your own conclusions!  I do know that if I see suspicious people wandering around the building, I call our security officer downstairs, and they can escort any suspicious people out of the building.

About five months ago, (or more) the security officials from the company I now work for came in to check out our set up, and had a lot of measures to really secure the space.  Key access only.  Visitors could only be buzzed in.  A panic button to seal the lobby off from the rest of the office space.  But as a cost saving measure, I believe they are planning to close this facility, and therefore have not installed any of the saftey/security features.  And because we work on the 7th floor, you would have to get out of our office, into the hallways and on the elevators or stairs to get to the lobby to truly be out of harms way!

Pretty scary when you make these realizations...
