The contractor in the cube next to me, the contractor in the cube next to him, and some third person I don't know talk CONSTANTLY. About 5% of the talk is about work, about 5% about other matters, and the rest is about guns. Guns, guns, guns. And ammo. Guns and ammo, rifles, scopes, guns, bullets, guns. Yesterday for some variety they talked about fishing for a few minutes before returning to guns. ALL DAY LONG! Oh my gosh, SHUT UP! EEEE!

Fortunately, bossies don't mind if I wear headphones. But it's not practical to wear them all day long.

Sorry but that made me laugh.  I work in an open plan office sectioned off by low rise screens.  We can still hear conversations from other teams and vice versa.  On occasions you laugh and sometimes you cringe.  At other times I have heard colleagues ask others to keep the noise down as they are busy or on calls.  Perhaps you should ask them nicely to lower their voices or you should try contributing to their conversations once in a while and see what happens.

We have some folks on our floor who INSIST on listening to their voicemail (including some personal ones - yikes!) on speakerphone -- loud enough that I can hear it five offices away!  Discretion, people, discretion!

They don't want to hear what I'd have to contribute, trust me. MUAHAHAHAHA.

I was just going to suggest perhaps interjecting into their conversation how you don't feel that that specific style of weapon matches most of your outfits and are too noisy... you find a machete works better, is quieter, and looks good with any outfit, especially high heels.  Contribute, I say, and when they ask you why you're interjecting in their conversation simply smile and tell them that it's because you've decided that their conversations are much more interesting than the work you were trying to get done but couldn't because of such vocal and stimulating conversations from them.  Repeat as many times as necessary until they perhaps finally discover the fact that not everyone wants to hear their conversations every day, all day.

Yes but my point is if you give your 0.02p's worth they might stop talking altogether - acting dumb can be great fun.  CG is right!

Maybe I ought to dress up like Agent Scully and carry a firearm and a giant flashlight. Hee.

Hmm, I've known people do that as well - so loud that you can hear them through the thin walls of their private office.

What do you think would happen if you left a message on their voicemail to the lines of: "Hi, Sue! I just wanted to ask that the next time you listen to your messages on speakerphone that you turn the volume down. I don't think you realise how many people can hear them. Everyone listening, say hi to Sue now!".

Do you think they'd get the cue?
