Hello,

I'm new to this site so not sure where to put this question hence it appearing twice, here and in the help forum.  My question is regarding shorthand - basically, do you still use it and, if not, would you want to learn it?  Would a refresher course or speed building be useful?

I worked as a PA for a number of years before becoming a teeline shorthand tutor at a business college.  I loved teaching but sadly the college stopped offering tuition as it moved more towards media studies.  Since then I've had a baby and now work at a school.  I'd really like to get back into teaching shorthand now and am thinking of offering tuition on a self-employed basis.  However I really need to find out what the current views are on it (as I'm a bit out of the loop) before doing anything drastic!

I'd really appreciate as many of your comments as possible - just a simply one liner will do.

Thanks, Isibindi

I use shorthand to take my own notes when I don't have a keyboard in front of me (I can type faster than I can take shorthand).

I haven't actually "taken" dictation in over 1o years, but I keep my hand in it (no pun intended) so I don't forget.

It's useful at seminars/conferences, and I've also used it in meetings where I wanted to write down some thoughts but did not want my neighbors to see what I was writing.

Also, welcome to the Forums.

hello,

thanks for raising the issue about shorthand.  I have just completed my bachelors degree in secretarial studies and shorthand has been one of the core course units.  To be sincere I did not like shorthand at the begining of the course and other students have had the same attitude about it, but with time i developed interest in it because it made me unique.

Having finished the course, I relaxed and stopped doing the drills till I  a job opportunity came up where i was required to take dictation.  I embarked on serious drilling daily.  I went and did the job with minmum difficulties and todate i still spare some time to look through the outlines.

So I think shorthand is still relevant because it helps save time, improves ones listening skills and is good for taking down confidential notes especially in public meetings.

I wish you all the best as you plan on taking up your teaching career.

Hi there - unfortunately, I don't know of anyone but that's not to say there aren't tutors in your area.  Try searching on google for "shorthand training" and see if anything comes up or Pitman Training may be able to offer a speed building course.  Alternatively, there are dictation practice tapes you can buy but I reckon your best bet is to actually find a real live person.  Good luck!

Hi Isibindi

Some time ago I sent an email enquiring whether anyone knew where I could get
Teeline shorthand magazines. You kindly replied saying that you had and was willing to copy these.

Please can you let me know if you are still willing to do so. I am happy to pay for the copies and posting. Please let me know the cost!

I look forward to your reply.

Many thanks
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Of course, I'm still more than happy to copy the mags for you.  Can you send me a private message with your details so we can arrange it.

Regards, Isibindi
