What a jerk!  I would give him notice based on those words alone!  In fact, I did just that a few jobs ago, when a boss told me I wasn't smart enough to do anything besides his dictation and outdated filing (I had a college degree and he was a high school dropout!  Go figure that one out)!  As soon as you find that better job, leave him high and dry with NO notice, and let him see how valuable you really were when the work piles up to the ceiling!  Maybe THAT will teach him a lesson, but sometimes, the lesson never gets through to thickheads like your boss.  You're better off without him!

That's why I no longer work for lawyers! They are filthy rich and do not share the wealth at all. I worked for one of the nicer, less egotistical lawyers and even he only paid me $6/hr no benefits. I was also expected (and was not told this in the interview) to do the paperwork and billing for his other business ventures he did outside the law office.

Run, run, run as fast as you can! He's a jerk. And of course he expects 4 weeks' notice when you quit but do you think he'll give any notice at all if he fires you or "downsizes" you? Heck no!

I was "downsized" from a company that I could see was slowly sinking into the ground (I was secretly looking for another job because I could see it coming - just didn't think it would come quite so soon) with no advance notice at all. At 5 PM on a Friday as I was getting ready to leave for the weekend, the jerk said "Goodnight and oh, by the way, I have to let you go because I can't afford to pay your salary anymore." I asked, "So when is my last day?" The answer: "Today."

Join a temp agency and give him the standard two weeks' notice (just to keep your professionalism in tact).

You deserve a better boss! No one should be spoken to like that!

Pengy, you need to decide how much you want to make, write it down, and write down what you want to do for a living.  I don't know what state you live in or what the economic situation is where you are right now.  I think based on the responses you're getting that you simply need to *really* press (oops, did I split an infinitive?!) in on your job hunt.  Write down your goal, write down your target date, and focus on it day and night.  You are not making enough money in my opinion and based on how quickly you were raised in the other position, you have great potential.  The only challenge is to find someone who recognizes it.  Don't worry about this joker, Wilson.  They are all  over the place, but not necessarily in a position that would directly affect you.  Despite advice to stomp out of there, that may not be in your best interest based on how badly you need to be consistently employed.  Just zoom in on that job hunt like you there is no tomorrow, and that will help your confidence during however many days you suffer through the abuse you endure right now.  I believe in you, and I know that others, do, too!  (Did I tell you that you obviously deserve more money than $24k.  Don't get desperate on a job hunt.  Hold out for the right one, even if it seems like it will never come.)  Keep the faith, "kiddo!"

I look back at my career so far and I wonder why I continue to pick "doozies" for bosses (not all of them thank god)!  (I didn't pick Mr. Wilson - I was actually hired by the office manager and my boss is the young attorney I support and he is wonderful!  We have the same assessment of Mr. Wilson.)  I've gone on a number of interviews the past year including a position I recently was very interested in -- I found out about it through Office Team.  Administrative Assistant to VP of a large Fortune 500 company with pay at $39-42,000 to start!  Office Team presented me for the position only to find that they did not want to see me!  I could not find out any information from Office Team as to why!  GoldenEarring, I live in Wisconsin.  I sure would love to meet you sometime!  I can't seem to find too many people who are very helpful in "training" other people on the skill of getting that top-level job.  I'm not getting any younger -- I'll be 38 soon (but I still have people thinking that I'm 28 or 30) and I know that some jobs went to someone younger.  All I know is that I'm not where I want to be.  I'm actually finding it hard to concentrate (hard to be motivated when your work is not appreciated).  I'm longing for that professional environment where bosses are supportive.  They're out there -- how do I find them?
