We were told our IT department is watching and reporting what people surf at work.  I know they "can" do it, but didn't think they would!  I dont surf at work so have nothing to worry about.  But some of the people I work with are getting lists of where they go. We actually are encouraged to go to the company site, they would have no problem with DeskDemon or the actual local paper online, BUT some play games, look at celebrity sites, even dating sites at work (and yes, rumor has it some look at por...n)  Wow!  Just had to share.

most companies have a policy of what's ok during work time (and then extra stuff during personal time, eg lunch)

At my last place, we were quite limited during work time but sites like shopping sites etc were opened between 12-2 (core lunch time period) and then locked down again. I had a little more access to sites during the working time as I needed airline sites etc to buy flights

As for por..n, no no no on any level!  Will be interesting to see what your company makes of this Jennika!

We are fairly open at our company to visiting websites. They certainly keep track (in a grand scheme computer list sort of way) but I don't think they do anything unless you go to red flagged sites (like p@rn). They pride themselves on being open and academic here. As long as it's not abused, they don't worry about it much.

Same as Marie, if you really abuse it .. they notice, but 99% of the population don't so it is fine.

Call me naive and silly, but I can't believe folks are still doing something as wrong as looking at p@rn, on the company's PC, while at work.  I mean, really???  Guess part of my confusion comes from the fact that our office plan does not allow anyone any privacy -- folks walking by can see your screen -- and I just can't see the reason they would need to do this during the workday.  With the advent of smart phones, laptops, tablets, etc... one would think if they wanted to look at that stuff, they'd at least be doing it on their own equipment so as to be less likely to be caught.

My company is the same as most listed above... websites and usage are monitored and they've gone as far as to block some sites based upon key phrases, but as long as no one is abusing it, no one really says much.  Blocked sites are kind of interesting here though... we work with the medical field, and some of the medical websites we can't even pull up because it is flagged as p@rn due to a key word.  Makes it fun sometimes trying to figure out the medical terminology the doctors are using so we can do our job!  Smiley

Well in my office, there was one individual who was on their own laptop, but they were using the company wireless, which is how they were caught.

We have a written policy on computer use and it includes reference to "limited personal use" of the company's email and website services.  The same applies to telephones.  My company recognises that people still have lives to run and sometimes access to these services are very useful indeed.

We prefer people to access the internet for personal browsing in lunch break.  Inappropriate content is never permitted to be visited and there would be serious consequences if we did.
