I was looking over some articles about people who were fired for blogging, such as this one (Jackie, if this isn't okay to link, please feel free to edit):
http://news.com.com/I+was+fired+for+blogging/2010-1030_3-5490836

I know (not well, but friends of friends of friends) people who have been fired or censured at work for what they published in blogs.

Do any of you have online blogs or journals? Do you ever discuss work matters there?

I do not have an online blog and if I did, I certainly would not include personal information or anything about my employer.

I do, however, keep an electronic diary or journal on my computer.  Usually, I only write in it when something really memorable happens.  I use initials rather than names if I can without confusing the issue just in case someone else manages to open that file.  I do the same thing in personal e-mails.

My DS2 kept an online blog for a little while.  He let me have the link to it so I could read it.  I told him he should be a little more discreet in his writing and to not use names, places, and times.  He only kept it for a few months and he hasn't made any entries in it for over a year and a half.

are you saying BLOG or biog as in biography?  because the letter isn't clear what it is.

The link Dettu posted no longer works.

So in relation to my earlier question, why would you do this and what is it for?

Blogging is kind of a hot thing right now.  A lot of my girlfriends have blogs in various places. What is it for...that's hard to say, I guess. It's an online forum for sharing information, news, chatter, whatever. Kind of like the old Usenet groups were but more multimedia (because they usually have pictures, etc.).

A blog is short for web log, an online diary where people post their thoughts and the world at large can read them.

Well sharing info on the web is all very well but you need to be clear about what you want to share, what you want people you have no idea of their perversions of otherwise, readin g!  Much of what I said in the salary info post applies to blogging too - what a strange name.  Any idea where that came from???!

Dettu, I don't have one personally, but blogging is very popular in the US.  I saw an article the other day where companies are hiring writers to produce daily or weekly blogs, chronicling everything that's going on in various departments of the firm.  I can't see how the writer would keep up his enthusiasm for this assignment--it's tough enough to come up with quarterly newsletter articles!

Our local newspapers publish excerpts each week from accomplished blog writers, picking out various views on national politics.

The practice seems very self-indulging to me...why would my views on various subjects be of interest to others?  This is why I never really understood why there was such a craze over personal websites....same type of "look at me" attitude.

I keep a personal work journal on my hard drive, but would never share it with the world.

I have a super complicated code for various members of staff / clients / places etc. It would be difficult to pinpoint exactly who I am, although I'm fairly paranoid about it!

I don't think you could pick up that many clues from 1 entry but a combination of entries could very well point me out clearly.....

Hmmm.... perhaps I should go edit a bit.....

You mean you do have a blog? Or do you mean this is just on your computer.

I read a lot of blogs, and I find them all interesting. I'm surprised to be the only one! Most of my friends read a lot of blogs too, whether they're people's personal-life thing or the more news-oriented, political, etc. blogs that are everywhere now.

Blogging is not something I think I'd get into too much, but I've a few friends who have done it whilst travelling to keep friends & family up to date with their progress.  I'm sure it will get to be quite normal practise before we know it.
