As a follow up to my "Punched" post, I was wondering how many of my colleagues out there have a second job to bring in a little extra?
Occasionally, I'll see a posting for a local doctor's or dentist's office looking for a receptionist to handle the one or two evenings a week they're open late. Part of me wonders if that would be manageable on top of my responsibilities here. Part of me tells me I'm stressed out enough!! So I was wondering, is that something any of you are doing now? Or have tried in the past? Did it work? Were there pitfalls?

I've thought about it but decided that my 'second job' needs to not have any set hours. I do bring in a little extra spending money through some work I do on a website.

I do some extra work for one of my bosses at home for an organization he is a member of. They pay me well (although I don't work very many hours at all), and I work at home on my own time. I've been doing this for about 4 or 5 years now, I guess, and I must admit that I'm getting a little tired of it all. I wish my upcoming raise was going to be large enough so I could quit this altogether but I doubt it will be! It sounds great in theory but in reality the last thing I want to do after spending 8 hours in front of a computer is go home and spend more time in front of a computer!

I have done computer tutoring as a second job and taught classes at the Park District. This has the advantage of ensuring my skills stay up to date and it's a good marketing line on my resume that I teach. In addition, it gives me the additional advantage of tax deductions for some of my expenses (like the replacement of a computer).
I make good money this way (I charge $35-50 an hour) and can set my own hours, within reason. I wouldn't want to work retail or somewhere that I only get $8-10 an hour.

Several people where I work currently work here as their second job. They work as licensed nursing assistants (nursing home). There are always plenty of jobs. It is an 8 week course (in this state) to be licensed though. As an example, starting rate is $13.50/hour, with $2.00/hour shift pay for working a weekend day shift. Double time for holidays. So for working two shifts a month, you can make $200. Not bad, and you never take work home with you. It is physically demanding work though.
