I am in the process of forming an intranet for my department - Finance & Administration (in conjunction with IT - I'm making Word documents & they're turning it into web pages...).

For those of you who have a company intranet, what do you find most useful?

If you don't have an intranet, what do you wish would be on one?

Anyone have a URL of an outstanding intranet for me to look at for examples?

Thanks!

I find it useful and handy to have forms/templates on the intranet.  Then when someone calls wanting travel or a memo or whatever, they can be directed to the intranet site and told which form to download or use.  We also keep electronic versions of the inspection manuals on there (ie JCAHO).  These are normally purchased on a CD instead of paper copy and then loaded and linked to from the site.  By having it available out there, we never have to worry about who has the binder or if a page has been ripped out.

Our intranet is not limited to F&A information.  We have links to a telephone directory, benefit and payroll information and contacts, all Corporate policies & procedures, various press releases - company news as well as all internal templates needed (expense reports/memos, etc.)  It also has space available to bookmark your top 5 sites (my Desk Demon link is there).

Can't give you a url it is restricted.

Links to associate projects and pages are good.
Copies of forms, templates and manuals for things are useful.
Google on the front page!

Did you know you can get Google for your Intranet now?

Yes google is a must not to mention a few mapping places like mapquest, etc. and if you use travel internet sites may not be a bad idea either.

We have the weather for all of our locations we do business with available for those interested as well as pertinent sites for our line of business such as the per diem rates website; policyworks.gov is very helpful and for the rate per mile as well on the same site.  Gpo.gov for the government bookstore is another good site to have available for those research topics.

We also have links to pertinent websites for our line of business, such as our customers, links to related sites for them, etc.

Local interest sites for your city are a plus for travellers that come in to visit you.  A link to directions to your facility from the airport is another good idea.

Forms and the policy are the most useful information I find.  Also if you use charge numbers a listing of those is good too.

Some other stuff we use is our internal directory with all the extensions and titles of employees, fax numbers, phone numbers, 800 number.  That is a useful tool, even for our folks out in the field.  I believe our holiday schedule is posted out there too.

We keep a database of our current engineering tests on it--you can see the status of your requested tests at all times.  Once the test results are in, you can view the information in report form.  I suppose this would apply across a wide spectrum of industries.  (We use Oracle.)  I find this the most useful feature, since without the database, I'd be forced to go back to my old Excel logsheet that keeps track of the test requests.

We also keep PPT slideshows of technical presentations available in  one area.

One especially useful item is the front page list of meetings and visitors in our facility--I'd be lost without that, and those who want to keep in the loop check it every day.

Along with the usual forms for HR, and widely-used templates, we post social event photos, new baby announcements, birthdays, etc.

I would give you a link, but it's only available internally.
