that when you have downtime that if you're not doing something you're going to get yelled at? Sorry that's me right now. I have done everything here and now I'm just like lagging waiting until five. But I don't know what else I can do...ok I do but I have monsterous headache and I'm just out of it. --- Bridget Wife to Eduardo (12/4/99), Mommy to Aaron (10/26/01)

I am sorely tempted to put you in touch with a temp I had recently. She had elevated "How To Look Very Busy While Doing Nothing At All" to an art form worthy of a great prize (says Raindance waspishly).
If "downtime" is something you get reasonably often, then you can plan those "manana" jobs for those times, or use some time for improving your skills, procedures or strategies. Or ask for extra work or help a co-worker who is rushed off her feet. It all depends on how your company functions as to whether any of this is feasible.
Hope your day is going all right and I hope your headache goes away soon.

I have a rather substantial list of "rainy day projects" that I can work on when my regular workload eases. They vary in intensity, so I can pick and choose, depending on how "with it" I am at the moment.

I know exactly how you feel! Although we're not afraid of being yelled at. Instead we're worried about layoffs or cutback in hours. A couple of months ago, actually I guess it was in the winter, we started with a real slowdown. They implemented a hiring freeze and said there would be "other measures" taken. About 3 weeks ago, one department had their hours cut from 40 to 35. As slow as we are in my department, we are all just waiting for the ax to fall. Thankfully for me, I am the most senior member of my department. One poor girl was only hired in September after being laid off from a job that she had held with another company for over 20 years. I am sure she is quite nervous right now. By 10:00 this morning I had finished all the work I have to do. We moved to a temporary office while they are doing renovations in our building, and we are in a very small space. So there is a limited amount of cleaning I can do - we did it all before we moved in March. At this point, we've all given up even trying to pretend that we're busy. It's pointless - all the "powers that be" know exactly what the numbers are. So, we're all doing the best we can to get through these long, boring days all the while wondering, wondering, wondering...

I'm glad I'm not alone. I finished all my work too! I don't have to look busy either, but it drives me nuts!!!
Anyone want to send some work my way?

Something I have done is to purchase the MOUS Certification books. Then when I am really slow, I go through some of the lessons on the book. This has a lot of benefits. I am increasing my skills, look really busy working away on my computer and they are easily started and put away. Also the hours seem to fly by rather than drag.

I was working for the facilities and IT departments at a company when business slowed and the layoffs started coming. There were many times I was very bored looking for something to do to avoid a layoff. I decided to train myself in AutoCAD (the program was already in the system for facilities) and in Visual Basic (for the IT department) to provide more support, but I ended up getting laid off anyway.
A month later, the admin from the purchasing department at the same company called me to see if I wanted her position. She was promoted to buyer and needed a replacement. At first I was hesitant (I guess I was still holding a grudge), but when we met and discussed the role, I accepted. They took me back at the same rate and bridged the gap as if I never left the company. Now I love my job because it is sooooo busy and so important. My goal is to learn the trade and move up to buyer one day!
