As things turned out, a week after my review, I found out I was pregnant. With a toddler and a newborn, I won't be able to stay at this company.
My plan is to ride things out until October (the baby is due in late November). I was reading back over my "I'm not cut out to be an Admin" post, and if and when I return to admin work, I realize that I need a position in a small office, one that has multiple and varied duties with many special projects. One that will keep me busy all day, not scrounging around for work! Or one where I was the only secretary, with many varied duties. (I think it was CountriGal who came up with this suggestion-thank you!)
I asked for and got new work here, only to have my initiative squashed by OM. Why? The work was outside my usual duties-filing, typing, and mailings. My review specifically stated to look for outside work when I finished my assigned duties. OK, the work might not be clerical, but didn't I do the right thing by asking people if they needed help?
I still think this whole situation is partly "newly created position syndrome." So, I choose to ride this thing out until I leave. Just do whatever OM asks me and not worry about it. That's all from my neck of the woods.

I'll start off with a congratulations! (I think it's beyond something in the water -- it has to be something in the air!)
And even though the job situation may not be resolved as you'd like, at least you've got it worked out.
I am the office manager in a two person office. I work for a small business owner, and when I came on, I WAS the office. If I didn't do it, it didn't get done. We hired the other lady when I couldn't do it all. I love having to do varied and multiple tasks, but I do know it's not for everyone. If you think this type of work is meant for you, then I say go for it.

Lioness, congrats! I hope the baby is healthy and beautiful!
Now, did you ask the OM? Or someone else? Well, now you know that "look for outside work" means "ask me for my spill over when you get bored". Me=OM She wants you to go to her, I guess. Try that, don't just give up. I'm sure that if you go through her for additional duties, she'll see the initiative that much clearer and will not have anything to complain about. Give it a shot!

And healthy pregnancy vibes to our other expectant moms: Jade, Bthanial and Jaya!
To answer your question, Yankee, OM told ME to ask OTHERS, NOT HER, for other work, then she shot my initiative down when she found out it wasn't clerical work. It was special-project type of work that most admins have in their job descriptions. (But like I said before, wouldn't most companies prefer their admins to have that kind of initiative?) Also, according to my job description, I'm supposed to be assisting the other assistants, but I found they don't want to give up any of their workloads, for fear they'll have nothing to do. This has really turned out to be a catch-22 situation and something I don't want to remain in long-term. So, like I said, all I can do is ride it out until I go on (permanent) maternity leave.

Well, I hope it works for you, Lioness, and when somebody figures out how to make that virtual nursery work, please, oh please, let me know . . .

Hey Lioness!
"It's hard to soar with the eagles when you work with turkeys!" And sounds like you have a real hen party going on there! Oh, brother!
Oh, and best wishes as you await your new, ahm, "cub"!
