BTW I also regularly realise I'm scowling when I'm concentrating, it doesn't mean I'm angry but I must stop doing it because I'm getting an ugly line down the middle of my forehead! :-)

Maybe his actions are being misread - a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I was once reported to HR for my angry body language during meetings. What HR were not told beforehand is that our meetings were held in "pods" with uncomfortable, soft, low seating that threw you backwards therefore, even if you had a sensible length of skirt on, the person opposite would still be able to see up your skirt. This meant I sat with my skirt tucked tightly under my legs and my legs crossed. Also because you were thrown backwards, this put strain on the buttons of your blouse and as a person with large breasts I was very conscious of this. On more than one occasion my buttons popped if moved even slightly and I at times I never noticed this happen and sat through meeting with my blouse gaping. Therefore I began sitting in meetings with my arms crossed as well. All I was doing was trying to preserve my dignity and instead I was further humiliated in front of an all male panel. Maybe give him a bit longer before you make a final decision, after all "He is a great worker and causes no problems". I wish I worked with more people like that.

I certainly wouldn't expect our professional staff to clean out the fridge. Not because I wouldn't like them to take their turn, but because they charge our clients up to £300 per hour. I think their time is better spent getting business for the company. I do expect people to clean up after themselves in the kitchen though - I am not their maid!

I worked for a national charity for almost 10 years. I loved my job but long hours because there was no money for more staff and low pay finally took its toll. The thing I found hardest to deal with was the time it took for decisions to be made because it was run by committees. Would I do it again? Yes!

The directors actually made a decision on our Christmas lunch yesterday, the earliest I've managed to get them to do it, and would you believe the restaurant they picked is already fully booked!

I have got 5 Christmas card designs and 5 lunch menus ready for the Directors meeting tomorrow. As we want lunch on the Friday before Christmas we'll have to get booked soon. Last year we booked on 1st September and just got the last 20 places.

I'm afraid I am one of these people who arrive at work, have my breakfast and put my make up on but then I do arrive more than half an hour before I am due to start. With a commute of one and a half hours I'm not ready for breakfast at 6.30am before I leave and I certainly wouldn't put my make up on during the journey. That said, I don't usually get peace to enjoy it!

I work next to a woman who hums, whistles, la-la-las, coughs, hiccups, sneezes in multiples, burps and I'm sure there is more I have missed. Thank god she doesn't share my room any more.
I don't have problem with someone blowing their nose - I'd rather that than listening to them sniffing.

I've just priced digital dictation with Big Hand and they were too expensive for a small company like ours. Not necessarily Big Hand that was too expensive, just digital dictation systems in general. 4 fee earners (one with blackberry access) + one secretary was about £5k. We're sticking with tapes for now.

It is exactly one year since I left I a job I hated and that made me ill. I used to spend Sunday nights in the bathroom at the thought of going into work next day and would sometimes throw up on the way to work. Last summer there were times I would rather have driven my car into a brick wall than go into the office. Finally one Monday morning last September I was driving to work and just couldn't face it any more. I drove to my doctors instead and sat in the car park until she could see me. I ended up being signed off for 6 weeks and then returned part-time but handed in my notice almost straight away when I realised that even with the intervention of occupational health nothing was going to change. Putting up with a job like that just isn't worth it, it affects every part of your life and relationships.

General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Addressing Letters

When addressing a letter or invitation to a married couple who use the same last name, it is correct to write Mr and Mrs Tom Cruise. You list their first names only if the woman uses her maiden name or a hyphenated name. In those instances, you list the man first and write Mr Tom Cruise and Ms Katie Holmes or Mr Tom Cruise and Ms Katie Holmes-Cruise.
However, if a woman outranks her husband, her name comes first, as in The Honorable Kate Holmes and Mr Tom Cruise.

I've just moved house and will now spend 30 days a year commuting. I'm renting a lovely little cottage on a working farm and when I compare this to the cold, dirty and expensive flats to rent in the city centre - I can put up with it. I'm looking forward to catching up on my reading too.
