I'd hate the uncertainty though, as you say, if the project has been going for nearly 4 years that's longer than some people spend in a permanent job nowadays.

I do hope it all works out - and I'm sure it will.  I really hope that you've been worrying for nothing and, if that's the case, at least it's given you the incentive to start looking around.
