Right, I know my bosses live on planet moron, but at what stage are they going to realise I am a human being with limitations, expectations and aspirations. I am not there for their convenience to blame when stuff isn't done etc.
OK, Here's the details:
1. I am classed as both a secretary and a paralegal 1a. I work for in-house legal department 1b. I work for oil and gas department 1c. I work for 2 additional business development directors 2. I do the work of an executive assistant 3. I am expected to do the work of both PA and HR 4. I am required (at the moment, hahaha) to pay for my own career development) 5. I am now going to be expected to cover for marketing assistant when she is on maturnity leave. 6. ten guesses who will be left with the marketing assistant's work once she realises that she has no intention of putting up with her sort of work? me. 7.when did they ever consider that this is not where my career is trying to go? never 8. Do want my career to go in this direction? NO 9. Another ten guesses at exactly how livid I am?....... 10. How many hours are there in a day and who doesn't get overtime etc but is still expected to be a fee earner? ME
Sorry about that, had to get it off my chest because bossie had a go at me last time he got me so upset and, well, you know the sort of thing.
Thanks for letting me rant, even if half of it doesn't make any sense.
Jess

Hi Jess - know completely how you feel. I was off on Monday and had to deal with something on my return. Why do PA's get lumbered with all the crap in the office and not be allowed to carry out their own job? I think you should have a word with whoever and put your foot down (firmly!). You cannot as a human being do more than you are capable. Yes we multi-task and juggle this that and the other but realistically you cannot be Wonder Woman! I too have a problem saying No - it's not in my nature as I like to be of service to others (comes with being a Virgo!). Everything I do unless urgent gets added to my tasks in outlook and I deal with each one as they come. That way I know what is completed and when. I suggest you do the same if you haven't already. Then if anyone asks why x y and z isn't done, you can show them the list and let them see where they lie in the scheme of things. You've got to be honest and upfront when these things happen otherwise it's us that suffers and our health. I love being busy but there are limits. Hope this helps! G

Jess, that sounds like an unbearable situation. Sounds like they expect you to break the very laws of space, time, matter and energy!
Gee had some very good suggestions. All I can offer are (virtual) hugs and chocolate.....

Did, didn't you know I am wonder woman in disguise? (well that is what the powers that be think).. However virtual hugs and choccies always appreciated.
and I quite agree with you, Gee's advice has always been excellent inthe past which is why I was extolling her virtues at the Times Creme!
I have decided that as I have only three more weeks of my training course to go and only one till my first proper holiday in over three years I can afford to say NO!
Watch this space, and all that.

JW, I can certainly relate to this. I too let the powers that be simply pile on the work, until things start to go awry, and mistakes are made, and managers wonder why. If you're not careful, you are heading for a nervous breakdown due to overload. Be sure to monitor your blood pressure while in the middle of all this. I found mine to be extremely high a few months ago. That's when I started insisting on some changes at work. You simply can't do it all. Movinonup
