Do you order your office supplies? If so, how often do you place a normal (not special) order and what is the one item you order the most?

I realize that, I am trying to see if trends and responses change over the years.

Looking back at that post 3 years ago, we no longer buy quality pens. (well we still get some, but not as a main supply) :-) To save a bit of money we get the cheapo bic pens. The item I order the most right now seems to be post its. I think it has to do with personnel change and the people we have now.. just like post its! 3x3 not smaller, not bigger, yes I can be creative in the colors. Go figure.

I realize that, I am trying to see if trends and responses change over the years. Trends and responses would only change if you changed jobs eg. moved to another department or moved to another company.

Disagree, Gee, with the economic downturn people are buying cheaper pens as per post above, different styles of notepad, and as for stickies, well some folk are going with plain yellow as they're cheaper than the coloured ones!

We are now strictly limited as to what we can order for office supplies due to budget constraints. Only the basics, and only the store brand. It's done through an online program so we really can't go off and do our own thing. We've pretty much learned to live with plain yellow stickies, simple "stick" pens and pencils, and plain manila file folders. (So much for my color-coordinated system!)
The worst is that we have to use a cheaper grade of paper, and generic labels which our copier does. not. like. We are constantly dealing with paper jams and worse issues. The copier tech comes out for the worse issues, scolds us for using the bad paper and cheap labels, and we shrug and say there's nothing we can do about it. We use too much to be spending our own money on these things.
Oh, we have no say as a department with the copier, either. We've asked for a replacement machine with a higher volume capacity since there's now about 50 people using it instead of 10, and/or something that wouldn't be so picky about paper, but we're told, "No go." Makes for frustrating days when the copier use is heavy.

We have standard stock items housed on site - they are the cheapest of the cheap anyway - so no change here!

We have a stockroom that maintains standard stuff like post its, pens, batteries, etc.
Other stuff we can order. Oddly enough, there is no special vendor designated for office supplies. Most of the companies I had worked for previously had negotiated contracts to save money.

We have a supplier who gives quite a good discount on the catalogue price but even so, we have to have the basic items and nothing fancy.
Post it notes come in many varieties but we have to have yellow and the catalogue company's own make - not always the most sticky but they'll do.
Day to day items - pens, paper, folders and so on, are also chosen from the basic range. But, they do the job so we can't complain really.
It has become quite a competition in the office on who best re-uses items that previously may have just been thrown away when there is nothing wrong with them.Double sided copying has become the norm now whereas before, it was rare. Does save paper so helps keep costs down.
I guess we are thinking that our contribution - however small in terms of cost - hopefully adds up to bigger savings and therefore helping our company during this financial downturn.

We are not limited when ordering office supplies, but all of the admins are in cost effectiveness mode. I have been using up supplies my predecessor ordered from four years ago. Our company has a national account with one of the major office supply chains and when we order online there are recommended items that are discounted because of the volume we purchase. I really haven't changed my method because I have always been frugal in office supply ordering. I do admit to going a little crazy every once in a while and ordering a pretty color post it note!
