Okay, sorry to do this but must vent!  Have been having computer problems since before I went on vacation two weeks ago, and today discovered that all of my e-mails are gone...I had hundreds of them in inbox folders, many of them extremely important info. including attachments...from my boss, from our VIPs, from outside contacts...The tech guy says he can only retrieve what I recieved in the last week!!!  I am totally pissed and don't know what to do, this happened to anyone else?  HELP!!!

Was using Outlook Express, was switched to Outlook today. Tech said that he has checked both set-ups for the lost e-mails, and can only access what was saved to the server.  Any ideas?

Oh my - now you know that they have to be SOMEWHERE!

Were your e-mails stored on a network?  And what is the back-up policy of that network?  If your IT guy cannot restore files from days, weeks, even months past, either he is ignorant or incompetant.  The files SHOULD HAVE BEEN BACKED UP!  If they weren't, or if he doesn't know how to get them, the problem might be the IT guy.

Now, if they were stored on your hard drive, they might be gone.  Ask your IT department how you should be backing up your computer so that this doesn't happen again.

I agree with fireproof.

Our Lotus Notes is on our network and it is backed up every night and stored somewhere.  Our IT guys are fantastic and can go back weeks, months even are retore the files.

Good Luck!!! nola

It is quite possible that the IT department backs up 7 days in a row and then reuses their back up system over again.  At the place I used to work at, that is how it was done.  Things could be retrieved if necessary but only back one week at a maximum.

My 2 cents.

Determine in outlook express whether or not you had instructed the program to Save email to the server (Tools, Then Accounts, then Properties, then advanced and look under the delivery section.) If you hadn't had them saved to the server then they can and are most likely gone.  If you HAD them saved to the server, even if you have the delete from the server when cleared from the Deleted items box, they MIGHT be present on a backup somewhere.  Trouble is, except for a total systems restore, Tech's dont often know how to find stuff within their backup.

To keep this from happening again, in Regular Outlook, go thru the same process (tools, accounts, etc) except leave unchecked, the clear items from the server after deletion box, ad then warn techie that he'll need to make sure that outlook is set up properly to ensure your files arent lost within the server and that your allocated mailbox space doesnt cause bounced mail because it goes over some predefined limit.

Let us know what happens!

Another suggestion... when they moved you they might have ended up creating another User ID.  which means that all your info is under your OLD name/ID and they didn't point them towards each other to talk.  This happened to me at my last company and all they had to do was go into one Outlook Profile and make it "talk" to the other profile so that they in time became one, with everything from the old profile moved under the new.

Good luck!

Thanks to all of you who gave advice...am feeling sane again today!  Unfortunately I have taken all of these suggestions to the IT guys, and they insist they have done all they can but to no avail.  Apparently my e-mails are kept on the server until I download them to my inbox, and from then on they are stored on my hard drive, and all up till now has been swiped.  IT guy says he THOUGHT he had set it up to store all on server, but he was wrong, and apologized.  I ended up talking to my boss about it and he said to chill, no biggie...things like this make you realize how dependant we are on technology!  Anyhow thanks again for letting me vent!
