My ds is having surgery and we just got the date -- the Tuesday of our scheduled vacation! So DH goes to work to request a different week off, and there is ONLY one week available. It's the same week my boss will be taking HIS vacation. So I talk to bossie, and he's OK with it, but I'm not.
Have you ever taken vacation the same week as your boss? I feel like since neither of us will be here to cover for each other, what might happen?!
On the other hand, bossie won't have piled my desk up to my eyeballs while I'm away!

Go for it, Donna. If bossie is for it, you should take advantage. I have taken days off many times when my boss was out...easier that way because he couldn't pile things up while I was gone! If he agrees, do it.

I agree...go for it. My boss and I have taken vacations at the same time and I prefer it because then he isn't sending me e-mails and voicemails and stuff isn't piling up. Besides usually if people know that your boss is on vacation they tend to find some other way to deal with their stuff.

Definitely do it! My boss and I prefer to be out at the same time. I just provide alternate names and phone #s on my voice mail and email (the "if this is reference to abc, call Mary Smith") and I haven't had any problems yet. I do leave her a phone # just in case there is a quick question that she needs answered, but she's never actually called me on vacation.
Good luck!!

If you have to have someone covering in the office while you're out, provide them a list of the "hot topics" with instructions on what to do with them (ie. hold for me or forward to so-and-so in my stead) and a list of alternative folks they can send phone calls to based on topics. Otherwise, as everyone has pointed out, it's not a bad idea to be gone at the same time bossie is. You don't have to worry that bossie is going to lose something that only you knew where was, bossie doesn't feel lost without you, and you both come back refreshed to the same situation. Enjoy! (And best wishes for a speedy recovery for your husband).

Looks like you've gotten some good advice here already, but let me just add, as a person just coming off a vacation after the boss, it would be much easier to go at the same time, at least you won't have a ton of work from him while you are gone.
My situation was a little different, boss took off the week of 7/9 and I took off last week, so now I have stacks and stacks of paperwork on my desk, mostly filing, but still, stacks and stacks. So take it from someone who just did what you want to do, it's no fun and you will take all week to get back on track. I would think it would be much easier to take a week off at the same time, but that is my opinion. I have never tried asking bossie for the same week off as him, I don't think our office could handle the both of us being gone, at least for more than a day or two anyway.
But on the upside to this situation, boss is on travel status right now for the week, he has a 4:00 flight out this afternoon, so I only got to see him for about a 1/2 day anyway today, not a bad deal after coming back from vacation.
Hope that helps ya to rethink taking off the same week. It really is lots smoother that way, especially if the boss is willing to let you have the same week off, I say ditto go for it!
Hope you have a great time on your vacation and enjoy it!

Just thought I'd let you all know... vacation plans are in stone now, the week of 8/5, however, ds's surgery has just been bumped up to THIS FRIDAY!
STRESS!!!!
So... vacation will be docile, at best. DS will still be going through major recovery that whole week.
