It's call All the Web, and they are suposedly better than Google.  I've been pretty satisfied with the searches I've run.  Here's an article on them...http://news.com.com/2100-1023-936757.html

OMG!  I am not liking this AT ALL!!!  I just went there and typed in DONNAP99 -- it listed all of my posts here (and elsewhere where I use the same ID), and when I clicked on the link it actually took me RIGHT TO THE POST!

OK, calm down.  Then I logged out of DD and hit the link again.  It STILL took me to the post!  Can anyone get to my posts in this way?  I'm not liking this, DD techies.  Can I do anything?

I mean, I realize that posting on a non-subscription board is taking a risk, but this search engine just simply makes it waaaay too easy for someone to read too much about my life.

P.S.  I'm e-mailing this to DD as well.

There are other sites out there that search newsgroups and bulletin boards. This is not uncommon and it is why we remind people not to post too much personal information they might not want others to see.

But can anyone get to the boards without registering?  I thought you had to be registered & logged on to do that here.  (Not that that's any great trouble for some people, but...)

Actually, I'm not altogether surprised, Donna. I was looking something up on a search engine about a year ago, totally unrelated to my name or anything else I was interested in, and up came a link to a post I'd made, with my name on it, on a board about composer John Cage a loooooong time ago!! I could hardly believe my eyes. I guess it just goes to remind you that you can't be too careful about what you put out there on the 'net, even in a seemingly private place.

Although I agree, there should be a way to safeguard boards like this, especially ones that deal with more sensitive subjects, such as support groups for health conditions. It's kinda scary, knowing anyone could stumble across your personal info.

Hmm. Not totally convinced yet, but then I loooove Google and want to have its babies.

I saw lots of my posts come up, but although they were cached, they were long gone from the original sites.

Okay, let me first address the log in to the boards issue.

We have a facility in place that will not allow anyone who isn't logged in at Deskdemon to read the boards, it kicks them back to the log in screen. We removed that ability during the early days of the merger with www.administrative-assistants.com and will restore it in the next 48 hours (probably sooner).

However, I need to reinterate some of the above advice about posting personal information to forum environments, whereever  they might be.

Search engines use automated programs (in most cases) to quickly skim both invisible metatags and text on web pages, in order to create listings.  That's how they decide the level of matches and the proper way to position those listings on the search result page.

In our case because DD has so much content out on the web,we're spydered often and at very high levels, additionally we have lots of sites linked to us, which increases the depth and number of times we're spydered for information. The smaller the site, the less information you'll find about them, the larger,,, unfortunately the more information you'll get in searches.

We'll lock the " back door" today, but it;s important to remember some basic rules of internet safety.  Don't post your personal details.  When you registered for DD you all got as part of that registration,,, an email account. When you need to request information from someone for instance a form that you'd like a copy of, use your DD Email account, OR the private message feature here in the forums, (which will not allow file transfer, but will give you a secure place to trade email information with someone.)

Also, you've seen the occasional "Unregistered post"? the reason that some people can, on occasions post without being logged in has to do with their connection.  When the software detects that you aren't logged in, it kicks you back to that horrid error screen, which we're all intimately familiar with. sometimes, on a slower connection the message to "kick this unregistered poster to the curb" crosses paths with a post that is going up.  It doesnt happen often, but it does happen.

That's why we keep our trusty moderator team on patrol, to help answer your questions AND to look out for suspicious or unusual activity.

so in short, common sense when it comes to the net is the order of the day,, but anything you don't want showing in the cool light of day means you should take it to the email account or the private message system, which is encrypted like an email account and has the same security in place.

Donna gave me the prompt to input my surname as a keyword on the search engine, just to see what would come up - 'I' didn't come up so that's good news.  However two of my cousins did!  One for a good reason as he has set up a local adventure park near where he lives.  But the other was because of a Tribunal decision which I had never heard about!!!!!
Scary!!!
