Will your company have a holiday party? If so, will you go? Do you have any good memories of parties past?
When I worked for the bio tech company, I was on a committee and it was a big event and had some good company wide parties. Since I left they have cut the budget and no longer have a holiday party but the departments I hear still go out to lunch. We had some great times at with our admin group,"ACE" Once we had a Hornblowers Yacht party on the SF Bay. It was such a good memory, and we went to Pier 39 (tourist area in SF) and an ATM there gave everyone a extra $20 who took out money. I am sure at some point the account was reconciled but at the time it was wow! Good memories! (waves to Judy, Donna and any other Ace members that lurk!)

Yes we are having a holiday party. It's gone down to just a fancy dinner. We used to have a DJ and games and all that good stuff, but, now with our company size a bit smaller, we have reduced it down to open bar and appetizers and a nice formal dinner. It's enough. Diamondlady Peer Moderator

This is our site's first year in business, we are a division of a larger out-of-state company. We are planning a holiday "gathering" of two hours at a local restaurant for appetizers and a yankee swap. I believe our director is cooking up some sort of gift for all of us as well, but this is one thing she hasn't asked me to assist with so it will be a complete surprise!
When I worked for an organization with 5 staff members, we would go out to lunch for chinese food every year, which was nice and non-stressful but not particularly memorable.

Being new here, I haven't learned the ropes, but we are tax payer funded so anything we have will be modest. I think they were talking about doing a departmental lunch.
My last company did a party for the site two years ago, but since they announced last year that they were closing that site this year, the somber mood precluded a holiday party last year. This year that site will be closed by Christmas (most of the people were gone by the end of October).

Well, I hate to sound like a "grinch", but I'd really rather not bother at the office this year because.....
-It's a potluck. I have nothing against potlucks, but at this time of year, I really don't need yet another thing to do.
-Someone always wrinkles his/her nose at the idea of a potluck and suggests "going out somewhere", but it's usually beyond my budget and the budget of most of the support staff -- which is why it ends up being potluck.
-Just TRY finding a date/time that works for everyone.
-It's the support staff that ends up organizing it, providing most of the food, and, best of all, CLEANING UP!
-I'm in the fundraising office -- December is to fundraising what March and April are to accounting. I end up taking a plate of food back to my desk anyway.
-People usually end up talking about work . Isn't that what meetings are for?
Now, that said, if we had the budget to all go out to a nice luncheon on the organization's dime where I wouldn't have to cook/bake, set up and clean up and be able to be away from my desk and phone without feeling guilty, then I'd be all for it. But the way it's done now....well....it's just more work.

We usually do a nice dinner for the leadership and their spouse, my boss's wife plans it. This year my boss decided he wants to fly everyone to Vegas for a nice dinner, see a show and stay overnight. I'd already told him I am contemplating not attending since it's always weird being the only person without a spouse.

We will have a nice dinner, open bar, music (not enough people for dancing) and even though people will talk business it is in a different light. Causual and fun. I actually look forward to it. It is a nice way to meet people outside the people you deal with daily.

Yes we will, I work for a large energy company but in one of their smaller offices here in the US. This year we will be having our party in NYC, not sure yet where we will be having it but I'm very excited. Whenever we do something in the city they put us up in fancy hotels so I'll be able to bring the kids along to see the tree at Rockefeller Plaza the next day.
