Prior to February of this year when I got made permanent, I had been applying for jobs and in March was offered an interview for a permanent job which I turned down - not sure if some of you remember.

Well the post has been re-advertised and I wondered what you make of this.  It sounds to me as if someone was appointed and the post has been vacated again.  However after only 5 months that does seem quite strange - either that or no one was appointed at all.

Would this ring alarm bells with you or not?  I am unsure whether to apply again or just leave it alone.  Undecided

Regardless of whether someone was appointed or not ... if you turned down the interview then what has changed that would make you consider it now?

If the job is identical to what was previously advertised the only thing that appears to be different is that you don't have reasons not to apply any longer ... but only you can decide that.

What has changed Cathy is that "I had just been made permanent" and was trying to give it a go.  I wasn't due to be made permanent until the end of March so if I had still been temporary I would have attended the interview.  It was just bad timing.

I always think if a job vacancy is re-advertised within a few months there could be issues.  So for that reason, I always ask at interview how or why the post has become vacant eg. is it a new post or has someone vacated it.

So that is my reason.

So now you are considering a move ... the job is readvertised ... you are still interested in it, seems there is a simple process:

Apply ... ask at interview ... decide

There are many reasons why the post may be vacant again after such a short time including the (admittedly unlikely event that) the postholder got run over by a number 9 bus two weeks ago Sad

The only folk that can tell you if there was a problem is the company and the post holder, the former may not be honest so you will have to use your good judgement and you are unlikely to know/meet the latter (number 9 bus or no number 9 bus - BTW does your local number 9 bus go anywhere interesting? just curious ...)

No need to be flippant.  All I wanted to know was, would this ring alarms bells or not?

I actually take offence to your remarks as I have just had a family bereavement.

Gee I was not being flippant, and I apologise that my remarks have upset you; that was not the intention.

You asked what we made of the post being vacant after 5 months and I have suggested a possibility.  The truth is that none of us on here can answer your question because we are not party to the circumstances of the post being vacant ...

I'd be curious, yes, but not hearing alarm bells.  As we all know, Gee - from personal experience - sometimes the "fit" just doesn't work and it's best just to cut one's losses.  Been there.  Done that.

Sorry, too, Gee, to hear of your family bereavement.  A sad time.

I wouldn't necessarily be worried.  I'd apply and ask the question at interview and see what the answer was and take it from there.

While it wouldn't set off sufficient alarm bells for me to not apply, it would be something I would ask about during an interview.

Likely scenarios:

1) Person hired, found a better job or hated existing job, quit.
2) Person hired, bad fit, fired or mutual decision to terminate
3) Job frozen due to budget constraints, pulled, now being reoffered.

I suppose I could think of other scenarios, but I think these are most likely. The problem is there is no way for us to know from the outside if the person sucked as an employee or the boss/company sucked as an employer.

Equally importantly, sometimes it just comes down to working style. I have worked for a number of bosses that other admins couldn't work for and have had few problems.  So the only thing that really matters would be how well YOU would fit the boss.

Gee - what did you decide to do?

Cathy, I didn't apply for the vacancy in the end.  Can't really say why.  A mixture of wanting stability and not having to move again I think.  While I struggled to settle into this job, it does have its plus points.

Thanks for asking.

Accentuate the positives and do not dwell on the negatives.
