If you were confided in by your boss with very confidential information, and someone from outside of your area mentioned it to you, how would you respond?  Would you tell your boss this person had asked you about the subject?

I probably would, if it is really confidential the boss should know it is getting around.

I would mention it to the boss too.  It would make him aware it was 'on the outside' already and also in a tactful way makes him aware that you did not mention it to anyone but it was out there already.

Well let's not jump to conclusions.  Your boss may have mentioned it to someone else as well.  It all depends on the subject.  I mean if someone outside the department has knowledge of this, it would make me wonder was it overheard or picked up in an email.

I'm not sure I would let my boss know. I hate being told stuff in confidence.  I think I would rather not know.  Makes life so much easier.

Funny, because I have just had this land in my lap today!  I have been told something in confidence by Boss, but there is a chance that it's already "out there".  I have been asked to keep mum, so I will.  There are different scenarios and ramifications depending on who finds out so if I hear anything I'll be letting Boss know.

You make a good point, Gee, in that we may not be the only ones who have been told something in confidence, but I figure that I'm doing my part by working with the information I've been given.  I do have a dislike of "cloak and dagger" stuff though.  Just tends to add a stressful pall to a day.

Yes, probably would mention to the boss that someone else had brought the confidential matter up..never know, could be a "test" to see what you will do/how you handle confidential information situations...

Thanks for the viewpoints.  I did mention it to my boss and he does know I am keeping the matter in confidence.  He was very happy I let him know.  The person who mentioned it to me is most likely working on something related to the matter.  However, fact remains, it is highly confidential and should not be discussed with anyone.

Thanks again.

I would le Boss Lady know.  Although, I have to say, on a couple of occasions SHE has been the one to let slip!
