Did you know it takes 21 days to form a habit?  Has anyone tried to retrain your mind?  I have heard this many times but I have never tried it.    Has anyone tried to put this theory to a test?   If you haven't lets try something for 21 days, move your trash can to a different location, answer your phone with a different greeting, maybe set a different routine when you first get to work.   I am going try to actually shut down my computer at night.  I leave it on out of habit, no actually I leave it on because in the morning I get impatient to wait for all my programs to load.   Pick something and lets try it for 3 weeks and see if it is "natural" to do by then.

Tut tut Susan.

It's company policy where I work to log off and shut down pc's before leaving at the end of the say.  In fact there are whole list of things we do in work that save energy and money...can't believe you aren't following that one given your IT skills and knowledge! Shocked

No one in work has a bin at their desk...my company installed recycle bins at various points in each building.  We recycle paper and general waste as well as confidential documents.

I think by the sounds of things I am already trained! Wink

:-) I need to turn off my home computer, I am on it until all hours.

Gee you don't have a trash can at your desk?  Are you allowed to snack at your desk?   What you you bring a baggie of berries for a snack, you have to go to a bin to throw it away?  What do you do when you open a package of post its and you need to throw away the wrapper?  When a pen, is all used up?  I can't imagine what it would be like not to have a trash can at your desk!  Maybe trash can is a different term in the UK, like trunks of cars are boots!   To me boots are something I wear on my feet!

I have found it does take 21 days or less to form a habit / change a behavior.  However, some it takes longer than others, and with some "old habits just won't change"Smiley  I can't wait to see if others find this to be true too.

Susan,

Don't you read my postings?  In my company, 2 out of 3 factories are not permitted to eat at your desk so no bins and no snacks.

It's company policy enforced by our customer because we are a factory and there is a production area/machine shop and lots of equipment that could get damaged if anything is spilt, let alone go up in smoke.

My building is different...so far we are permitted to eat at our desks as we are not near the production areas.

Like I said we have recycle bins for everything.

Oh and by the way Columbus discovered America - remember that when it comes to spelling colour and harbour.  The US didn't invent the trash can you just renamed it along with everything else so why question what we in the UK do or say?  No need to nitpick! You posted a topic and I answered it.  My comments are as I state them and if they differ from you or your way of thinking, then so be it.

As for a trunk, isn't that part of an elephant?

I log off my computer at night, but we have strict instructions to leave it on so IT can push out updates on software overnight.

I've tried this. Here's my philosophy in a nutshell:

It may take 21 days to establish a habit, but it only takes 2 days to break an established habit and lose it completely. (LOL)

Go on then Gee, tell me who would want to wear a pair of elephants noses to go swimming?

Don't you just love the variety in life/language!  It is, after all, the basis for some types of comedy!

It does work, I stopped drinking soda and changed to water, milk and two natural juices a day (v-8, orange, that type, not "snapple" or those type) and it took just about 3 weeks to not think about that can of Coke in the vending machine.  I didn't think about it at the time, but yes it was just about three weeks.   If I had to pick a new habit to try and change, it would be at home to put my car keys in one location!  This morning it took me 5 minutes to figure out where they were.  But then I was running late and my mind was all over the place.

I agree with Marie's yes you can form a habit, but you can break it easier! :-)
