Internet security and passwords.  Almost every website requires a password.  It has been suggested that people change passwords every so often.    Do you change your password, every quarter/six months?  If so, how do you keep track of what you change it to?  Password settings are getting more and more complex, how do you keep from forgetting what password you entered for this or that site,  especially when it is a site you don't visit all that often?

At work we have to change our password every six months or so.   I have noticed sites are asking for more complicated passwords all the time.  It used to be we had to have one number, now we need a cap and a number, some sites need both of those plus a special character!  I have no idea how I remember them all!  I worry if I write them down on a spreadsheet that some one would steal it.  I have a simple password for the easy, I really dont care about sites, then 4 different main passwords depending on the level of security.  The password I use on my secure accounts is so confusing even I type it wrong many times, which I guess is good!  I am getting to the point, I may write them down and keep them in a secure place.  There are just too many sites with too many different combinations.

Memory is amazing though, think back before redial cell phones and phone lists, back when we had to remember phone numbers!  Remember how many you knew and still remember?

I don't generally change my passwords, though I should. I use roboform to track them.

I use a word that has great personal meaning to me, but wouldn't in any way be associated with me in any official capacity.  (Meaning, it's not the name of a relative, or a street I lived on, or a school I went to, has nothing to do with any hobbies, or anything like that.)   I keep that word and change the numeral and/or character around it when I need to change it.  On my paper backup, I only keep track of the number/character change, knowing that the word is the same.  So even if someone were to find my "cheat sheet", it wouldn't be of any use to them.

So far, it works.  But there's talk of creating a system in our organization where the password is going to have to be completely different each time.  So I'm working on coming up with a system for that.....

I had a message on Friday from our IT dept that is time to change our password.  They have added where we now need 1 cap, 1 number and 1 special character and at least 8 letters long.  I think our security alert is stemming from the massive hack on Sony game system network.
