Bossie just got back from a week's vacation and he is listening to ALL of his accumulated voice mail on his speaker phone.  WHY do they do that?  All the managers here do that and it is so annoying.  Is it all about "I'm so important, I'm going to invade your personal noise space"?

If it's anything like my boss they call that multi-tasking.  Listening to messages while lets say going thru the mail.  It's just a time saver.

No, he was just sitting there staring into space.  He takes calls that way too.  I know sometimes you want to write down things, take notes etc. while you're on the phone, but do we really need a speaker phone turned way up for THAT?  I don't think so.  I can just see me doing that, and that being OK with everyone.

Because it's easier to take notes about the voice mails if both hands are free and your ear doesn't hurt from having the receiver against it for so long.

Maybe ask your boss to shut his office door when he does this?

I hate it when customers call using speaker phone. It cuts out and I have to tell them to repeat themselves because I couldn't hear all the words (same goes for people with bad cell phones that cut out).

When it gets really out of hand, I just get up and shut the door myself.  There are numerous people in this department who require someone else's coming by to shut the door when they get loud.  You'd think having it happen once would impress upon the person that he/she is disturbing others, but no.  Bossie is worse for me because he's right across from me.

Yeah, some people just don't know how to take a hint.

But it sounds like you are handling it well by shutting the door yourself. I know it's a pain in the butt to have to do this, but hopefully some day they will take the hint and do it themselves.

Congratulations on keeping your cool. You're handling it very professionally.

One last thought:

If it gets to the point where you don't think they will ever get the hint, gently say: "Would you mind closing your door when you use your speaker phone? It's kinda distracting. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you."

This way you're not telling them flat out that they are rude (even though you would like to) but is a gentle, reasonable request.

Good luck. Hope the situation improves.

Here's an Idea: People often forward voice mail messages to me and ask me to transcribe them.  I used to do it with the speaker phone but it was annoying my co-workers, besides which it was difficult for me to hear that way. So the OM ordered me a headset.  Perhaps you could suggest a headset for bossie's phone?

Great, practical idea Ozbound.  Why didn't I think of that?    You are one smart cookie.

I think I can go you one better......

How about an Executive who not only uses his speaker phone to listen to messages........this is a Korean owned company....so most of his messages are in Korean....FULL blast for everyone in earshot to hear! ! !

(too bad I don't speak the language - really think I could get some good inside information)

Heck for all you know he could be getting love messages...    That would be kind of nice, get messages that are "encrypted" by being in a foreign language that no one else in your office speaks.  :::hmmmmm, maybe I should study up on my foreign language skills:::::
