I came across this article when browsing around this morning and thought I would pass it along. I know a lot of you are in the age range where your doctor is probably starting to push having an annual mammogram. I, personally, do not believe that a test that sounds so destructive to the breast tissue can possibly be all that beneficial to a woman. There is no way I will believe that smashing my breast tissue between two "plates" is not harmful. However, I realize that many believe it is a "necessary evil" to catch cancer early. I just believe there has to be a better way. After all, men aren't encouraged to go through this type of screening for testicular cancer. I also believe that knowledge is power and that to many people take things at face value. If we read, research and ask questions we can find the information to make the right decision for our individual need. Being in a family with a tendency toward cancers...and in particular my younger sister had a double radical mastoctomy at the age of 32, I really appreciate the fact they exist. But the can indeed be painful! (And I'm fibrocystic to boot) !And sometimes the technician can be almost brutal with the darned thing! Sonograms are also used, but they tend to be used secondarily after something is dectected on the mamogram. Which reminds me, due to go back for the second round of testing this year...have a large group of cysts, which fortunately turned out to nothing! (Except uncomfortable!) But it would be just wonderful to find another way to do this procedure! (It always makes me think of a line in the movie "All the President's Men"...something about a "big *** in a vice! " Yep, that's a mamogram, all right!)

I have a girlfriend who insists that if women invented the machines used to do mammograms, it would be a table with two cones you'd lie over, plop them down in and a 360 degree picture would be taken of both of them simultaneously. No pain at all!

Now that kind of test I wouldn't mind. I realize that for many women its a definate need, but c'mon - there has to be a better way than what they do now. Mother Nature does enough damage on her own and like I said before, I'm convinced that the way this test is performed does even more. I have to wonder if anyone has ever done a study to discover just how much tissue breakdown can be attributed to this abuse. I also have to wonder if women with cysts like daisylee's have ever had a problem with the test causing them to burst and leading to more problems. I think that is my biggest fear - having an unseen/unfelt cyst burst and causing an infection of some kind. But then, that is the purpose of asking questions and researching - to ease my fears and have the knowledge to make the best choice for me. Michelle

The last time, they bruised me! And my cysts tend to be a bit, well "weepy"....this time they were hysterical! If I didn't know better, I would have sworn that I was breast-feeding! I like the "cone" idea...and you can have "cones" of varying sizes...to accommodate all manner of sizes!...just insert the right size and voila! (Oh, now I really don't want to go back!) Daisylee (OWOWOWOWOW! (just prepairing!)) P.S. But by no means will I not do this...and those of you in the over 40 age bracket...you should do your annual check up too! This will have to do until something better comes along...maybe we could suggest the "cone" machine to the AMA or someone? (BTW, has anyone else ever had to have the cysts asparated?...Talk about FUN!) Edited by groucho on 11/12/01 07:24 PM.

"Weepy..." That reminds me of my one and only so far... I had recently started some hormone, and I shot across the room!!! When I did, it (needless to say) surprised me, I jumped, and almost left my poor breast in the contraption in the process! DonnaP99

As some of you know, I am a breast cancer survivor. Yes mammograms are a pain in the arse, yes they are uncomfortable, however, when I see women even considering not getting a mammogram , I urge you to think twice. Until there are approved better ways to determine if you are at risk, get the mammogram. In fact, urge everyone you know to get one. You could be saving the life of someone you love by such a simple loving statement.
Nope, they are NOT fun, but neither is dying.
