Lately I have been seeing people type telephone numbers as "888.555.5555" in both letters and e-mails.  One fellow even had it this way on his personalized memo form.  I still type them with dashes (888-555-5555).  

Is using a decimal instead of a dash a new "standard" or does it matter?

I don't think it matters.  I see the periods on people's business cards, e-Mail signatures, etc.  I think people think it looks more "internet-savvy" or something.

It can go both ways.  I think it is just easier of some people because they type using the 10-key instead of the keyboard.  When I'm typing an non-business email I use dots.  When I type a business email or a letter I still use (555) 555-5555.  But then again, I'm kind of old fashion.

So I guess it all boils down to personal preference.  I was just wondering if it was a new standard.  If so, its one I would definately balk at changing to.  I can see where some would find it easier to type the decimal with 10-key, but I can do either with no problem.  If anything, I would have to think to use the decimal instead of a dash.  

I personally think it looks unprofessional, but I am also very "old school" about a lot of things.  To each his own.
