"God Bless America" just because she's Canadian? A co-worker was complaining about Mariah Carey and Celine Dion (he just has a general dislike for them) and I mentioned that I heard Celine singing "God Bless America" and a female co-worker said "I can't stand that! She shouldn't be singing that song because she's Canadian!!" and I said "Bwha! Why can't she sing that song? You don't believe that people who aren't American felt the pain and loss we did on 9/11?" Then I went on to say "It's like saying I can't sing God Bless America because I'm Mexican or my dad can't sing it because he wasn't "born" in America" What do you think?? --- Bridget Wife to Eduardo (12/4/99), Mommy to Aaron (10/26/01)

While I don't particularly care for her music (I'm more of a classic rock/oldies kind of person) I do know that she did a spectacular job singing it. I remember crying when I heard it because despite the fact that she wasn't born here, you could still hear the emotion in her voice singing it.
And I don't have a problem with her, or anybody else from a different country, singing it. Why can't somebody from another country celebrate and sing of America just as much as someone who was born and raised here? Did these same people have a problem when Queen Elizabeth sang the words of our National Anthem after 9/11? I hope not, because I can't think of many things that were more comforting than knowing we, as a country, weren't alone on our grief last year.

I'm with both of you. There is absolutely no need for parochialism of that sort. After all, Gina G was Australian and she represented Britain in the Eurovision song contest.

That's silly. I think it's awfully nice of her to sing "God Bless America" and I recall Canadians being wonderfully kind and sympathetic to us in the wake of 9/11 in general. So God Bless Canada, too!

I agree 100% with Ozbound. This is so stupid. I wish people would lighten up a little bit about stuff like this. Who cares if someone from another country sings another country's anthem? So very narrow minded and short sighted. We're all human beings and we shouldn't be told "no" or feel like we should have barriers placed in front of us because of something so trivial. Really. Now, if I recall correctly, we Americans took the tune to "God Save the King" (UK's national anthem) and put our own lyrics to it... "My Country Tis of Thee" -- it's a nice song so, what's wrong with that? Can't we all just sing a song and get along? (...hey...Cool! ...I made a rhyme!) SNA (I be rhymin') in AK

On a lighter note, has anyone seen Celine Dion's new video for "I'm Alive"? They've digitally enhanced her face so much she looks like an alien. Everyone's talking about it here, and I thought they were exaggerated until I saw it myself.

If LOUD = Good, then I guess she's good. To me she's just loud. She could probably sound great if she would channel and control her voice. But then again, she's the multimillionaire so who am I to say??? WhiteSatin

I just reread this post and I have a problem with your coworker having a problem with a Canadian singing the US national anthem.
Tell her this: After September 11, 2001 many Canadians flew US flags to show their support of the US. Is it okay with your coworker or can only Americans fly the flag? Also, many Canadians donated money to the American Red Cross - is that okay with her or should I ask for my money back because only Americans should support American charities? When the US has enemies around the world, your coworker should think before alienating friends of the US. But if she really wants to complain about Canadians singing the American national anthem, she should have complained about Robert Goulet, who (about 30+ years ago) sang the wrong words.
Personally, I don't care much for Celine's singing. All her songs sound the same - start soft and then end really, really loud!
I much prefer Bryan Adams, k.d. lang, Shania Twain, Sarah McLaughlin, Avril Levigne, etc....
