We had a firm-wide conference call this morning for administrative professionals, going over the new programs they're rolling out this year. They are finally going to start tuition reimbursement for administrative professionals. They haven't gotten to the actual details yet, but it's a step in the right direction.

On the other hand, they are going to completely demolish the current pay grade scale and replace it with something called "career levels," with, supposedly, much wider salary bands. We will go from 17 paygrades to 6 career levels. For some reason, this sounds ominous to me. Probably because right now, the paygrade scale is a secret, even though it had been posted on the intranet until this summer. I just have a really bad feeling about this. Anyone gone through this kind of restructuring, or have any thoughts or comments?

I've never worked anyplace where there were career levels or pay grades.  Does everyone in that catagory get the same pay?  What if your skills and level of responsibility are greater than someone else in your pay level?  Does everyone get the same raises or not based on the accomplishments of the group?  I think I would rather be judged on what I do not what everybody else does.

This is sounding like the GS pay system.  Maybe I'm wrong though.  I like the GS system, because you know in advance what any advancements in your career will be worth, you can raise your grade level by your job description and duties/experiences, and you get step increases based on how long you've been in a grade.  So even though there is a broad range for a GS-9 to make, you can make anywhere in there depending on what step you're at.  I like the way our system works, but then that's one of the reasons I joined the government field.  Your system might be similar or might be way different, hard for me to tell based on what you've said.

Countrigal, I don't know if that's where they're going with it, but that sounds better than what I was imagining.
Thanks!

Salary bands are a way of capping your wage bill. You might continue to grow your job, take on lots more responsibility - but you can only get 20-25 because it's a 20-25 job. If your boss wants to give you more money your job needs to be regraded - and you can't do that because as far as the company is concerned, you do the same job as all your "peers". They also get you coming and going on age and length of tenure. Once you hit the top of your band (which could take years) you have to change jobs if you want to earn more.

That doesn't sound like it would work for me.  I want to get paid what I am earning.

Actually, I'm sitting at the top of my paygrade right now. I need to have my job re-graded, and it should be, it's nothing like what my "peers" are doing and they keep promising. Anyway, I think my position is going to be in the first career level (what a stupid name!), so I'll be in the same position I am now, at the top of the level and needing to "prove" that my job is different than my "peers," when everyone knows that it is very different.

Never mind. I don't know why I'm complaining. I have a job, after all, and if it stays the same and only the names change, what difference does it make?

You need to talk it over in order to articulate your inner thoughts. I didn't think you were really complaining at all.
If it works for you, then I hope it goes ahead.
