Hi Y'all, what is the correct (or at least the most common) abbreviation for a million? My salary ought to be 1 mil 1 mil. 1 m 1 M or what else? Moeve

At my company we use 1m but I don't know if this is a standard across the board or just here.

My company uses 1m or 1 million (long hand) for the prevention of misunderstanding.
I also wish you luck on your 1m salary - donation always welcome (only joking, i know it was just an example!)

I think we did this on deskdemon recently with the thousand thing -- that's where I learned that m = 1,000 and mm = 1,000,000 -- I will never forget it again.

Sueg22, that's exactly what came to my mind first when seeing this post. And what I gathered from that previous post was: a) if you're an accountant, you tend to use "mm" b) general abbreviation is "m" c) and that we can get so much interesting information through these questions. M the Roman numeral for a thousand. So 1MM would be a thousand thousand or one million. Remember, the Romans had no concept of 0, that was an Arabic invention, along with algebra.

According to my Gregg Reference Manual (p. 131), to express large numbers in abbreviated form (metric style), you would say 1M; M stands for mega, signifying millions.

OK guys, according to my guy here at work, who knows EVERYTHING, it is 1M. He said it's in the AP Stylebook.

Sorry if that was a repeat question - I did search for "million" before I posted but I did not find that threat you mentioned. Thank you for your help. Moeve

Searching can get tricky sometimes, and also depends on which forum you search. Anyway, this way you got more of a census of what is "standard" and not just what is "right". Oh what information we can share! CountriGal Peer Moderator
